Ruggid and Durable
There is NOTHING out there that can deliver this much power (40w) using a battery. Nothing. I've looked.
First off, I just want to say that everything the positive reviews have said is accurate. Sound lacks some bass at high volumes but that is to be expected. Battery life lasts around 2 hours at max volume and bass and probably would last longer if used sparingly (I haven't timed that yet).
I would just like to touch on a few things that others haven't.
Durability:
I have this secured to my bike using rubber strips and hose clamps...keeping the amp on the down tube and the speakers on the center of the handlebars. Of course, this is not how it was designed to be used, but after a year, they still perform as good as the day i got them. Altho they have scratches and a small dent in one of the bass speakers, everything works like new.
It has held up in rain like a champ(i tried to keep it dry, but it rained one day while i was at work and when i came out there was a small puddle in one of the speaker cones). I wouldn't worry about the satellite speakers getting wet, as everything is sealed up nice and tight, but there is a small gap (1 cm) around the knobs where liquid could seep in. You would also want to keep it away from the sand as much as possible as that would easily jam the knobs.
I have used it year round in hot and cold weather (again, held up like a champ in the winter snaps of -20* wind chill (on a bike riding 20 - 30 mph))and there seems to be no effect, altho i should re-time how long it can hold a charge.
Build Quality:
Some people would complain that the cables aren't retractable, and thus take away from the "portability". I think that the way it was designed here (2 rca cables and one male to male 3.5mm? cable) is probably the smartest way it could have been done. The cables will easily be the first things to get worn out (there thin metal fibers after all...the more they flex and bend the sooner they'll break) but thankfully are easily replaced. You can get longer cables if you need them or shorter if you don't need the separation, all at radio shack for ~$10.
More for your money:
I bought this specifically for mounting on my bike to have loud music on while i ride in NYC, but after receiving my pair of speakers, i wish i had bought two sets. They are just so well designed and thought out in terms of the portability (snapping the center speakers to the main body to make one cylinder?! CRAZY!)and durability.
And the bag they give you is perfect for keeping it all together. It easily fits inside a messenger bag or backpack.
Others have mentioned the ear plugs and the bag, but you also get (or at least I did) an adapter for your cell phone's headphone jack. I don't know of any product that gets bundled with one of these. Really, I don't know of any thing so well thought out.
I bought it over a year ago, and went looking around to see if they still sold them as i thought they had ended production. Even today in 2008, there is NOTHING that can compare to the power and portability of these speakers and im THRILLED to see that there are more being made.
And for $100!?!? You CANNOT beat that. Stop looking at other speakers, stop reading reviews, and just buy them. You'll be happy you did.

But it goes to 11....
okay, so you get a lot of hype everywhere. Here's what you need to know:
- Yeah, mighty lithium battery, recharge from the wall. No way to change batteries, once it's dead, it's dead. But you can play and charge at the same time.
- Yes, it will play for 5 hours. However, you can only have it at half volume with the bass slightly below 0 (on a +5/-5 scale) If you crank it to 11 (yes, it's actually labeled that way) you only get about 2 hours out of a charge.
- I have perfect pitch, so I'm not happy with any speaker, even the $6000 pro gear at Techno parties. These speakers lacked warmth, the all-metal construction may be crisp, but it's tinny and missing harmonics that you'd get with wood reverberation. For under $100, the sound is full, rich, and can put speech level sound over a double basketball court area. Position the speakers the right way, and you can go even farther. It totally rocks an average bedroom.
- These are just speakers. No am/fm, no CD, you MUST have something with a headphone-Out line. And it needs it's own battery source.
- Size - it's just slightly bigger around than a can of soda and three times as long.
- Ships with earplugs ("for your neighbors")
- Five ports in back: power in (wall adapter included), Headphones (??? i don't get it, but, okay), Right speaker RCA, Left speaker RCA, and 1/8" line in (standard headphone type plug, double 1/8" plug wire included)
- To use: plug in adapter or make sure it's charged. Plug included RCA cables from main unit to the two endcap/speakers. Unscrew endcap speakers (1/4 turn) and position at whim. plug included 1/8" line into main unit and external music source: ipod, CD player, etc (not included). Press and hold power button for 3 seconds until power light shines. Adjust bass and volume levels to preference.
- Warning: the included 1/8" cable will not work with the iPhone, or any device that does not have a standard headphone jack.
- This will NOT replace a high-end home stereo system, nor will it make many boom-box owners jealous. It will make the kid's room bump, and provide wonderful sound for presentations from a microphone or laptop.

GREAT
Got my
boomtube
just before Christmas and I love it. It looks good and sounds good for what it is and the amount I paid. I wanted portable speakers to use while editing on my Mac with Avid express pro on film sets. And sometimes it can be a bit loud on sets, so wanted speakers that could cut through. These work great, they fit into my rucksack and the battery means that i don't have to worry about power if I'm on location. When at home I use them to listen to Itunes, and yes they could be a bit louder, but then they always could be! I bought them from the US Amazon site as, including packaging, it worked out to be about £75, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than the UK price of £235, which would have made them not worth it. All in all I'm very satisfied.
