Over The Top

This is one of the most exciting 9 video minutes I have ever experienced! If you are a "Car Guy" (as I am), turn up the sound, turn down the lighting and be prepared to be thrilled! The ride will have you flinching, leaning and wiping your brow at its conclusion. I can extract existential meaning from every second, and the conclusion is truly satisfying. The introductory text is comprehensive and truly "sets the table" for what follows. I give this piece an enthusiastic 2 THUMBS UP!

Breathtaking footage, good background info

I had seen this video clip on YouTube but decided I wanted to see it on the big screen in all my surround sound home theater goodness. So, I plunked down significantly more for this short clip than I would pay for most full length feature DVD's. And I am not disappointed.

The picture quality on my 50" TV was very good, no complaints. I read someone said it looked like VHS on their TV but I found it was very good on mine. The sound quality was also quite good, though I am not certain that it makes use of the 'surround' feature. Anyway, since 99% of the sound necessarilly comes from the engine/exhaust, which is located right behind the bumper-mounted camera, I don't know that - even if it were recorded with today's technology - you'd see significantly more 'surround' effect in the soundtrack.

I also liked the background information - little more than an expanded wikipedia entry about the film, but nice to have it all in one place like this.

I've shown it to all my 'gearhead' buddies, and they all loved it.

A great little cult film, but it don't come cheap!

This short film gained cult status primarily through its unavailability. I got mine from amazon UK, although it turns out the disc is Region 0, so it will play on any DVD player (no NTSC/PAL or region headache). If the one here is from spirit level films, it's the same. Just find the cheapest option. Here's the pricing comparison:

amazon USA: $29.95 with free shipping.
amazon UK: 11 pounds ($18). You'd have to pay shipping but that's not as expensive as you might think, usually five bucks to the USA.
mfg/dist (rendezvousdvd): 16 pounds plus shipping so the most expensive.

I think honestly even twenty bucks is a lot to pay for this. It's unique as heck and surely couldn't be replicated nowadays without closing all of Paris(!). It's 10 minutes long and a great rush. But I'm not sure how many viewings it has in it. An interview with Lelouch would bump this up to a 5-star rating for the DVD. Also, the overdubbing of a 275 GTB engine over the 450SEL 6.9 as driven in the film (if true) makes it somewhat less "real" despite claims to the contrary.

Rendezvous

Any motorhead that does not own and worship the greatest 9 minutes of unedited, non-enhanced street driving ever filmed should turn in their string-backed driving gloves and stick to the animated feature "Cars". This is simply the best ever. I still want to know who was actually driving for LaLouch....alas, we shall probably never find out. If you don't have this on DVD, shame on you!

Take a deep breath

Rendevous is one of the most exciting 9 minutes you'll every spend viewing a movie. Bolero would be an appropriate soundtrack for it, as the speed builds and the danger increases as the Ferrari leaves the broad venue of the Champs Elysee and encounters every more narrow, curvy and crowded streets. The ending is sheer brilliance and in the blink of an eye offers all the explanation that is needed. Once your heart goes back to its normal cadence you'll be left with one emotion, jealousy.

This is possibly the greatest nine minutes ever captured on film! Climb aboard with Claude lelouch as he roars through Paris in the early morning at incredible speed! This is a truly amazing dvd.
