Good machine!

It has been a year since I bought this laptop. It is my first system and I would like to say that it has been working properly so far. I know about the Compaq reputation, however, I dare to say that this product shows good qualities.
I do not have the problems like the others with the wi-fi. The wireless router is located in my roommate's room and I have never had any problems with the Internet connection.
I use the computer primarily for downloading music, programs, some multitasking, research in Internet, and burning CDs, etc. I keep the system working for long hours, however, this does not affect the performance at all. It is very quiet.
The only flow is maybe the battery which keeps up for just an hour and a half--two hours. Besides this I would say it was a great choice for a first laptop! I paid the price of 750$ from Best Buy. It was Jan of 2006.

I bought this notebook at Best Buy for $750 in January '06 (and I gave my 4-star rating with that in mind). The only problems I can find with this unit lie in the keyboard and the volume control, which are themselves not enough to dissuade anyone from purchasing this model.

The keyboard feels cheap--when you press the keys, you can't really feel the keys pressing back. I bought this machine for my law school classes, and I pray that the keyboard won't be destroyed until after I graduate. On a side note, it is impossible to play emulators on this notebook because you can't operate the "run" button and "jump" buttons simultaneously--you can only run or only jump. If you want to play Donkey Kong Country on this notebook anytime soon, buy a controller.

The only other gripe I have with this machine is the sound control. There is no indicator displaying the volume change when you press the buttons (a pop-up display would have been nice). You will find yourself consulting the "sound properties" icon in the system tray, which defeats the purpose of the volume controls!

In general, though, this is a capable laptop for the price--the price I paid, anyway. I have played games such as "Mafia" and "The Godfather" on it with little slowdown. The wireless connectivity is reliable and easy to turn on. Ports are on the sides rather than in the back, which means easier access. That having been said, if you can look past the flimsy keyboard and trial-and-error sound adjustment, you are in store for a reliable notebook at a bargain price.

great buy!

broke down and finally got a laptop. always stayed away from them since i always thought that they were very hard to upgrade. but this can have the memory upgraded up to 2 gigs, and with the integrated wireless lan and cd burner-that really put this over the top.

besides, i snapped it up very quickly at best buy for only $750. what a steal. wirless networking is a snap with xp, now i can get around the house, sit and work, answer email and watch tv. just a great little laptop- very happy with this purchase.

Poor wifi

I have the V2570NR and have had it for 4 months. For the first month the wifi worked fine. Then it got worse and worse until the point where I can only connect via wifi when I'm within 5 feet of the transmitter. My wife's laptop does not have this problem. Very poor, considering it cost $750.
