Ignore Dr. Levine's uncertain circumstances and read this book

If you have a child with special needs, you must read this book. The previous reviewer who suggested that a reader not buy the book because of the accusations against Dr. Levine is overlooking the fact that many, many parents and teachers have found his books very helpful and hopeful. He has already volunteered to revoke his license and is no longer seeing patients. But what he has to say about children with learning differences gave me insights to both my children who have their own individual struggles. Instead of focusing on their inability to spell or memorize where the states are, I see two very creative children with their own gifts. Would I bring my children to see him? Not a chance. But I would recommend this book to another parent of a child with special needs in an instance because what it says is that important.

A MIND IN TIME & A LIGHTHOUSE IN HAPPY VALLEY

A MIND IN TIME came highly recommended for people like (all of) us who face certain uncertain challenges. Ourselves & our dear children & friends. I bought it for my partner in these tasks. She read it & found it very helpful. I will read it next. Because MEL LEVINE's work on the 8 neurodevelopmental mind systems seems to put an important focus on a vital view. Because it appears he's also worked up some practical strategies.

From my experience & study I do believe that we ARE what we think, among other considerations. So HOW do we think, how do we LEARN to think, how do we THINK about all this ? There is much we can learn.

A salute to MR. LONDON & all who labor in these fields ! A million thumbs up to all who struggle here ! There is much we can do NOW to make our lives & our children's lives much happier & healthier ! Let us ALL be encouraged, with good reason ! Even knowing that this is very difficult work & that we sometimes (often) do NOT get the results we may want or need & in fact suffer immensely !

I may have more to say after I read A MIND IN TIME. I expect it will be a very valuable read.

We got A MIND IN TIME from LIGHTHOUSE BOOKS, an excellent AMAZON partner. A "new" copy retailed for $ 15 @ BORDERS by The Water Tower on Michigan Avenue in Chicago but was out of stock there. LIGHTHOUSE BOOKS had it "used" in stock for $ 1. LIGHTHOUSE BOOKS's copy was in even better condition than described. Just as good as "new." Shipping was several days quicker than promised or expected. LIGHTHOUSE BOOKS is an unusually effective & highly economical resource for booklovers. HAPPY VALLEY ? That's where they live !

Great book

This is a wonderful book that emphasizes the need to look at the individual needs of students.

"Different minds learn differently," writes Dr. Mel Levine, one of the best-known education experts and pediatricians in America today. And that's a problem for many children, because most schools still cling to a one-size-fits-all education philosophy. As a result, these children struggle because their learning patterns don't fit the schools they are in.

In A Mind at a Time, Dr. Levine shows parents and others who care for children how to identify these individual learning patterns. He explains how parents and teachers can encourage a child's strengths and bypass the child's weaknesses. This type of teaching produces satisfaction and achievement instead of frustration and failure.

Different brains are differently wired, Dr. Levine explains. There are eight fundamental systems, or components, of learning that draw on a variety of neurodevelopmental capacities. Some students are strong in certain areas and some are strong in others, but no one is equally capable in all eight. Using examples drawn from his own extensive experience, Dr. Levine shows how parents and children can identify their strengths and weaknesses to determine their individual learning styles.

For example, some students are creative and write imaginatively but do poorly in history because weak memory skills prevent them from retaining facts. Some students are weak in sequential ordering and can't follow directions. They may test poorly and often don't do well in mathematics. In these cases, Dr. Levine observes, the problem is not a lack of intelligence but a learning style that doesn't fit the assignment. Drawing on his pioneering research and his work with thousands of students, Dr. Levine shows how parents and teachers can develop effective strategies to work through or around these weaknesses.

"It's taken for granted in adult society that we cannot all be 'generalists' skilled in every area of learning and mastery. Nevertheless, we apply tremendous pressure to our children to be good at everything. They are expected to shine in math, reading, writing, speaking, spelling, memorization, comprehension, problem solving...and none of us adults can" do all this, observes Dr. Levine. Learning begins in school but it doesn't end there. Frustrating a child's desire to learn will have lifelong repercussions. This frustration can be avoided if we understand that not every child can do equally well in every type of learning. We must begin to pay more attention to individual learning styles, to individual minds, urges Dr. Levine, so that we can maximize children's learning potential. In A Mind at a Time he shows us how.
