Fine TV w/some limitations

I've had this TV since December 2006. Paid $1800 to Best Buy. Been very pleased until just recently. The monitor developed a vertical line along the right side where the black bars from a standard size display would be. Not terribly noticeable, but noticeable. I have retired this set to the bedroom and purchased a 52" Toshiba 1080p as a replacement.

Strenghts: picture quality, price point
Weaknesses: No tuner (moot w/cable/satellite tuner), poor sound (moot w/ home theatre), quality control, remote (useless)

What more could you ask for?

I was in the market for a 1080p HDTV when I thought to myself, who really needs a TV anymore? I mean, come on, who actually uses a TV anymore? We Buy a TV, then we hook something to it like cable or satalight dish. Why bother paying the extra thousand or so dollars for a monitor that can recieve TV signals when you don't even use it that way. So I bought this monitor. It can't recieve TV signals but who cares. I did the same thing I would have done if I had bought a TV. I brought it home and hooked it up to my cable box just like most Americans are going to do. I saved a ton of money, and I'm able to use this thing with my computer, and all of my game consoles. Let me tell you, you have not watched a movie until you do it in 1080p my friend. You'll never go back. I liked it so much I'm buying another one to hang over the fireplace in my living room. I watch a lot of movies in that room when my rather large family comes over, and I don't want to have to pile everyone up in my room to watch 1080p movies again. Five stars all the way for this thing.

Best Bang for Your Buck

About a year and a half ago, I purchased a 32 inch Westinghouse LCD TV for the bedroom. This TV had a better HD picture than any of the other big name models and I have been extremely satisified with it. I have an HD Cable Box, DVD, Media PC, and a Video Game hooked up to it. The picture quality is fantastic. I cannot comment on the speakers as I use and external stereo.

I purchased the 47 inch Westinghouse after my Sony HD TV of 5 years went dead and would cost more to repair than I purchased the Westinghouse for.

This TV looks great in 720p and 1020p. Analog Channels suffer a little as with all HD TVs. The fill mode works nicely for those who don't like to stretch 4:3 broadcasts into 16:9.

Pros:
1) Great Picture
2) Plenty of Inputs for DVI, HDMI, Component, Svideo, Analog, etc.
3) Cost -- A Sony or Samsung would cost twice as much and would not be any better
4) Styling -- I find the simply styling to be very nice and not overstated.

Cons:
1) Remote is basic. However, not many people are going to be using the remote other than to teach your Universal Remote the codes.
2) IR Sensor -- IR Sensor sometimes has trouble waking up when you try to turn it on. My advice is to get a remote with a strong IR such a Home Theater Master MX series.
3) Menus -- The menus are very complete but are very small due to te high resolution. However, you really shouldn't hardly ever need to use the menu after initial setup.

Overall Rating (5 stars here / 92 percent)

I would advice people to forget about the name recognition and actually take a look at which looks the best and which is the best for the money. There was a nice $5000 Pioneer Plasma I liked while the picture was better, it was not worth the $3500 more especially considering the issues that Plasma have had. LCD never seem to go dead. They are generally ranked at about 100,000 hours (23 years at 8 hours a day).

One last point. This is technically a monitor because it only has an analog tuner and not a ATSC tuner. Who needs a ATSC tuner unless you are planning on hooking up a HD Antenna and picking up local station in HD. My cable company provides me with the HD local channels and Satellite generally does the same. i would have been if they would not even included the analog tuner as it is not needed IMO.

Do your own due dillegence but I personally find this to be great quality at a great price.

It's a real pleaser

Very pleased with this monitor. Have it hooked up to Sony PS3, to a satellite box and to a computer (so I can watch Watch Now Netflix movies).

Very pleased with the settings right out of the box. Used some settings found on some online forums but find skin tones and other colors seem right on the mark out of the box.

Have no stuck or dead pixels. There were light bars at the sides when I first got the monitor, but no they're gone and the picture is very uniform. No coulds (like on some Samsungs, Sharps and Sonys) and no banding visible at all.

The brightness and clarity is stunning. The upscaler is decent. Sony Blu-Ray movies are great and sometimes I sit closer with these movies and am really stunned by it all.

Sitting close to an LCD isn't hazardous like sitting close to a regular TV emitting lots of RF and radiation.

Enough controls, if you like to tinker, to keep you busy, but very easy to get to. I don't use the remote so don't have any comments about it, but very basis by the looks of it. TV is very adjustable, but I've found there is little need to adjust. Some others have trouble with bad input signals and there are adjustments to allow overscan to hide bad inputs that cut off a line of the picture leaving a bright line on the top or side.

For the price, this monitor is far and away the best available (if you can still get one that is). I spent almost two years reviewing, viewing, testing, etc. and have been fully satisifed with this monitor. Thought about getting a 52", but this 47" is fine. (This is a comment women will appreciate.)

This monitor is no longer being manufactured, so to get one now will mean finding it in inventory and when they're gone they're gone. Rush, hurry, kick it up a notch ...

Very good computer monitor

I primarily use it as a large computer monitor. The DVI connection works great - the image is 100% digital, no overscans, perfect. One important note: I had to turn off the AutoSource feature in the menu for the DPMS feature that automatically turns off the monitor to work. Now when the computer goes into the sleep mode with the screen off, the monitor turns itself off too and does not consume any power. With AutoSource On, it will stay on indefinitely and consume power. I measured the power consumption and it is very good: it ranges from 108 watts to 270 watts depending on the backlight setting in the menu (0 corresponds to 108 watts and 100 corresponds to 270 watts used). Since my room is not very bright, I keep it at 0 - 23 backlight and the monitor consumes very little power - 108-140 watts. The power consumption does not depend on any other settings like brightness or contrast. This monitor is close to perfect and is probably better and greener than Sharp Aquos as computer monitor with proper settings. The menu and remote are clean and easy to use. I wish it had one more HDMI input.
