Great researching
I recommend this set of 4 dvds to all
wildlife
entusiasts. It's one great collector's item.
Disc 3 is wonderful, Disc 4 also good
National
Geographic
Wildlife
Collection
There are four discs in this series and each is 60 minutes long.
Disc 1: Eternal Enemies, Lions and Hyenas
Disc 2: In Search of the Jaguar
Disc 3: Last Stand of the Great Bear
Disc 4: Whales in Crisis
Disc 3 alone makes this set worth the price of admission. It is beautifully filmed and focuses entirely on the Pacific Northwest Coastal Rainforest in British Columbia.
Disc 4 comes in a close second and covers various whales in various locations.
Disc 1 was passable, but too graphic for our taste.
Disc 2 was completely worthless unless you have some bizarre fascination with the scientist filmed.
==========
Disc 1: Eternal Enemies, Lions and Hyenas (Narrated by Powers Boothe)
The first disc is devoted to the relationship between lions and hyenas in northern Botswana and their constant struggle over territory. It has some very graphic footage of infanticide and fratricide, so I would not recommend it for the kiddies. Unfortunately, the sound quality on this one is awful due mostly to the change in tone of Powers Boothe's voice.
Included footage:
--Baby hyenas killing their siblings.
--A lioness giving birth
--A lioness and her cubs being attacked by an Indian cobra. The mother lives, but the babies die. You see her for days, suffering from the effects of the cobra's bite. (The hyenas eat her babies.)
--A female lioness is viciously attacked by another pride of lions. (The hyenas feed on her body as well.)
--Life inside a hyena pack (and their false male body parts).
===========
Disc 2: In Search of the Jaguar (Narrated by Glenn Close)
This disc is almost entirely devoted to the work of one conservationist, Alan Rabinowitz, who researches jaguars. In fact, two thirds of the disc are devoted to just him, including his bout with cancer, his plane crash, his plans for death, etc. There are only about ten minutes of actual jaguar footage and they are filmed in Belize, Panama, and Brazil.
Included footage:
--Jaguars grunting at each other during the night as they hunt.
--Jaguars swimming, hunting, fishing, and marking their territories.
--A 30-second mating scene.
--A jaguar cub (again, only 30 seconds long).
==========
Disc 3: Last Stand of the Great Bear (Narrated by Keith David)
This one definitely has the best narrator--Keith David. I could listen to his voice for hours. Filmed in a temperature rainforest in British Columbia (western coast of Canada) called the Great Bear Rainforest, this disc is about forest conservation as well as wildlife conservation and focuses on both bears and wolves and how the entire ecosystem relies on the running of Coho salmon.
Best footage:
--A young mother grizzly and her cub chased by another older female and her cub.
--Male grizzlies trying to kill the cub of a mother so she will mate. (Females won't mate for two years while they're raising their young.) This particular mother had already lost a cub.
--Mating footage of bears.
--A pack of wolves dubbed the Coho pack.
--Wolves swimming across a very large lake/river.
--Coho salmon jumping and running upstream.
--Black bears catching huge salmon. Bears eat the eggs, wolves eat the brains, and scavengers eat the rest.
--A white black bear (yes, he's white, but he's not albino). It's a recessive trait that turns black bears white. (Actually, he looks more white and yellow.)
--Fanged male salmon fighting over who gets to fertilize eggs in the stream.
--Wolves catching salmon (and these are huge salmon).
--Wolves attacking a black bear. (He gets away but wolves have eaten bears here before.)
==========
Disc 4: Whales in Crisis (Narrated by Michael Carroll)
The majority of this disc is devoted to solving the problem of stranding whales, which is directly linked to sonar usage by naval ships.
Best footage:
--Transient killer whales attacking sea lions. (The ones in maternal pods only attack salmon.)
--Tracking of killer whales in the Puget Sound by visual identification (dorsal fins and saddle patterns). They use this to track genealogy too.
--Sonar is injuring killer whales, but the Navy needs sonar to detect enemy submarines coming close to shore.
--In the Florida keys, a group of pilot whales strand themselves. (Pilot whales also strand on southern California beaches too.)
--In the Arctic, scientists study bowhead whales. (Some are so old they were calves during Thomas Jefferson's time.)
--Rare footage of beaked whales in the Bahamas stranding themselves during a Navy sonar exercise. (Autopsies showed that sonar made their ears and brains hemorrhage. They eventually died.)
--Humpback whales in the Tonga Islands where they mate and nurse.
