Like many others I picked this book up because it was free and a classic. While I dont' regret reading it, I found it somewhat preachy. Beauty is essentially flawless, not only is she modest, hardworking, beautiful and kind, but she is contrasted by her stepsisters who aren't as beautiful and are hateful. Beauty questions herself of the beast "Is it his fault that he is so ugly, and has so little sense?" deciding that the best qualities in a husband are "virtue, sweetness of temper, and [my favorite] complaisance." Some epic romance that makes. There was essentially no character development, and no chemistry what so ever between Beauty and the Beast. However, the story was short, and it was interesting to read the original version, since I had only ever read other spinoffs, and seen the Disney version. Overall, I would say, sure go ahead and read it but try to keep your expectations low.
If you like the old tales, this is the story for you in the original text. If you want a story in current language, don't buy it. I love old english, so I loved the story and have read it to my 4 year old who loved it too. There are no pictures, but that is almost better so you can use your imagination. Children like pictures though, and once my daughter got over the no pictures, she really liked the story.
Good Book!
I had no idea that the orignial beauty and the beast was so different from the disney classic's movie! It was very short! I did enjoy reading it though!
This book was amazing. I have always wanted to know the true story behind on of my favorite Disney movies and this stoy did not fail me or my imagination. Even though there were different characters than in the movie, it seemed less nessicary while readign this. I highly recommed this book to anyone who wants a look at the classics! :)
Classic Story
This is the classic fairy tale, not the Disney version. It is fairly short, and I have seen this version included compilations of Fairy Tales.
