Nice piece of equipment But..

Harman Kardon AVR 146 Home Theater Receiver with iPod Control and HDMI connectivityThis Is a very nice piece of equipment and is quite a handful to learn about. I had it for a month now and still don't have all the command and nuiances figured out. It has great sound and adaptibilty. Though I am not sure if I am getting all I can get from the system. I have contacted Harman Kardon ( they were very helpful)and other companies I have the unit controlling to try and get the most from the system Istill experimenting with contol options and set up menus but for all the tinkering I am still not sure if this is the end all. Once I learn more I can say that this is a really great buy . But for right now it just GOOD.

At This Price, Nothing Else Even Comes Close!!

I purchased the 146 refurbished about 2weeks ago for under $200 dollars. It replaced my pioneer vsx-516 which is a very good reciever but, The Harman sounds 10x better. This reciever is matched with my Kef 2005.2 speaker system. All I want to do is watch action movies now. The sound is that good. Music sounds rich and warm. Please pay no mind to 30wpc rating, It plays very loud and clear. My only complaint is that it doesn't process audio via hdmi only video. And you can't see any video via 6ch input when hdmi is hooked up, you have to hook up a component input. Too many extra wires for me. So I won't be keeping it long for that reason only. For an entry level reciever...IMO, there isn't anything out there that compares to it. It gives you High-End sound quality. I'd reccomend to friend.

Great receiver

Great system. Easy to use and install. I would like to have a little more power for when I need more volume.

Perfect for those on a budget (or those that don't want to spend a grand)

I've had this receiver now for three months and could not be more pleased with my purchase. I spent six months looking for a new receiver and couldn't seem to find what I was looking for in the sub $400 price range and I couldn't justify spending more at this time. Black Friday deals bailed me out big time, because this receiver is the best of both worlds.

Here are the three reasons I purchased this receiver:

1. It has HDMI pass through. This cuts down the cables going to my TV to 2, One for HDMI, one for the analog on screen display. I've heard some people complain about their receivers creating "noise" in their video, but I've never had this problem.

2. Lots of audio in jacks. With 3 digital (2 on the back, one on the front) in and 3 coaxial you shouldn't have any problem getting the most out of whatever device you're connecting.

3. The on screen display on this receiver covers all the bases and is very user friendly. The only problem with it is that you have to have an analog cable (ie s-video or composite) connected to your TV to use it.

If there is a con to this system it's that it doesn't have auto eq. So grab that tape measure and be prepared to figure out your distances.

I've noticed some people shy away from the Watts per channel rating. In this price range you don't have to worry too much about it. Most brands (ie Sony) inflate their wattage to the maximum peak amount, not what the receiver can do consistently. For a small to mid-size room this thing puts out more than enough power to make your home theater rich, full and vibrant.

Solid basic 5.1 receiver

I purchased this for a small apartment living room. I didn't need much, just a basic 5.1 receiver with optical and 6 channel analog inputs. This fit the bill perfectly.

It looks fantastic; why don't other companies design their receivers to look modern? Do we need 30 buttons on the front with that ugly flat black paint and yellow-orange labeling and VFD? You can turn off the blue VFD and lighted blue volume knob on this receiver if you are watching stuff in the dark which is really nice.

The receiver has a decent set of features. Hook up the monitor out to a TV via S-Video or Composite cable and you can access the On-Screen-Display menu to tweak speaker sizes, individual speaker volume, etc. You can also assign audio inputs to different video inputs to help with your particular setup; I appreciated this flexibility when connecting all of my equipment. You can also label each input so you know what you are switching to which is also nice. The receiver displays the label you choose when using that input. There are plenty of inputs! The built-in AM/FM tuner picks up all the local stations in Phoenix.

So far I have found the sound quality to be great for my setup. I've heard better systems, but then again, I'm not using very good speakers, just what I could afford right now (Sony Floor L/R, Center, and Bookshelf Surround L/R speaker). The receiver pushes plenty of power for a small to medium sized room. I can feel explosions, hear plenty of detail in dialogue and sound effects, and really enjoy movie-watching much more.

I would recommend this for anyone looking for an affordable receiver who does not need HDMI audio or the latest TrueHD or DTS Master Audio decoding. Get this now if you can pick one up still. It's a solid 5.1 receiver with great features, plenty of inputs for optical, coax, 6 channel, and stereo componenets. I haven't tried the HDMI switching but be advised it will NOT play audio from an HDMI source which is just fine with me.

The AVR-146's sonic quality and sophisticated features make it an exceptional value. If A/V receivers are the heart of a home entertainment system, then Harman/Kardon AVRs are both heart and mind. They take the vast array of audio/video formats and sources, and make it easy for you to select a source, tailor it to the requirements of your listening room and then play it back without skipping a beat. As with the tradition of Harman/Kardon's revered audio receivers, the AVR-146 features true high current capability, ultra wide-bandwidth amplifier design with low negative feedback and all-discrete amplifier circuitry. Dual independent power supplies, for front and surround channels ensure that the power is present. The surround processing is handled by 24-bit, Twin-core Cirrus Logic 49500 series DSP, Logic 7 processing, A/V Sync delay and 100MHz component video switching, the AVR-146 is high in performance. Use the A/V sync delay to match the audio processing to the audio delay of digital displays. 6 Digital Inputs Dolby Digital EX & Surround Sound Dolby Pro Logic & II DTS & ES Front AV Jacks Headphone Jack High Current Subwoofer Preamp Outputs 7 Device, Pre-Programmed Remote Control 4 Inputs, 2 Outputs S-Video Dimensions - Width 44 x Height 15 x Depth 35 cm Weight - 10 kg
