Senn killers

Of course, ordering headphones from the internet is a scary experience. You don't know what condition they will come in, whether they'll fit, or most importantly, how they'll sound.

I can tell you 100%, don't worry with these babies.

I needed new headphones after my old Philips HN 110 Folding Noise-Canceling Headphones (which were absolutely terrible) stopped working, and after borrowing my roommate's Sennheiser HD448 Around the Ear Headphones and my best friend's Sennheiser HD-280 Professional Headphones, I realized that I not only wanted, but absolutely required the best sound I could get for less than 150 dollars (I was picking out a birthday present). I spend hours and hours doing homework and reading, and consequently, usually listen to an enormous amount of music per week.

The Sennheisers were fantastic, but overall, completely lacking in bass, as should be expected by open-air headphones, and with the amount of rap I listen to, bass is a necessity.

I did an extensive three week search when I came across these- they had universal acclaim- and after reading about 40 reviews, I realized the reviewers were describing headphones that exactly fit my needs. So, on to the headphones.

I was immensely disappointed when the company who sold me these, Streamline Audio and Video (don't order from them), told me after I ordered them that they were on backorder and that I would have to wait another ten days before the headphones shipped. However, it was absolutely worth the wait. Right out of the package I was a little disappointed with the sound; the bass wasn't punchy enough and the highs nearly as crisp as the Senn's, so I left them plugged in and went out for the day, letting them play on a fairly high volume while I was gone. The next morning I put them on and was completely stunned. All of my music had taken on a new character; every note was clear and discernible, and I was listening to music the way the artist wanted me to hear it. The phones are fantastically comfortable, fit just right, and the sound is stellar.

One thing you should know- the impedance of these headphones is far lower that of the HD 280 or HD 448. Therefore, it is more difficult for an mp3 player to drive them, so an amp should definitely be used (my friend made me a CMoy). However, if what you're looking for stellar sound at a reasonable cost and awesome comfort, definitely get the ATH-M50s.

You can never go wrong with Audio Technica

I bought these after a long strong of headsets that were just plain disappointing. A friend told me about Audio Technica and swore by their quality, so I decided to give it a try.

The earcups are a little tighter than on my last pair, but I'm used to it now. The sound that comes through it louder than on any other pair of headphones I've owned. It's so loud and clear sometimes that I need to turn the sound down on some programs or music files. I used to have trouble with headphone cords tangling up all the time, and it drove me nuts when I'd try to untangle them and just have them twist up on itself again. I tried all kinds of wires from clip-downs to braided wires and nothing would live up to it's promise. The cord on the ATH-M50 is thick and coiled in the middle so tangling is never an issue. All in all, I was very satisfied with my purchase.

Pros:
*Excellent sound quality.
*Sturdy frame that folds up if needed.
*Comfortable fit.

Cons:
*The wire, although very thick and sturdy, is a little short. Consider buying an extender or moving closer to your computer.
*If you intend to use these to replace a headset, you will need to buy a standalone microphone. It does not come with one.

Great durability and sound clarity

I bought these headphones because cheaper headphones ($30 range--like those found at Wal-Mart and similar stores) kept breaking on me after 2-3 months of use. I've used the Audio Technica headphones for several hours a day, practically on a daily basis, for the past 8 months. No sign of wear and tear, they fit comfortably, and they certainly haven't broken. Very sturdy construction. The sound quality, although (from what I read about this particular pair on the audiophile online forums before purchasing) it does take some time for them to "burn in" (whatever that means--I'm no audio professional, music producer, etc.--I just really enjoy listening to music) and the sound quality is splendid once this "burn in" period has taken place. I highly recommend them for sturdy construction, comfort, and sound quality. Well worth the $99 I paid for them.

Wow, better than expected

First of all, I have to say that I'm not really an audiophile but audio technica has changed my perception of music. My first set of "decent" headphones were the hd212 pro's by sennheiser and they lasted me about 2 1/2 years before they broke. They were okay sounding, but the bass kind of drowned everything out. After they broke I decided to invest my money on something more expensive. I did some research and ended up buying the audio technica ath ad700, an open set of headphones. Man, were they amazing! They totally opened my ears to detail in music and made my appreciation for music double. Although I think I have developed minor tinitis because of it =(. While they were great, the open air construction made them become an annoyance for people who were close by me. So I decided to look into buying a set of noise isolating headphones. I wanted a pair that would give punchier bass than the ad700 but still gave great detail, wouldn't be fatiguing to listen to and I was also looking for some portability. My brother has a pair of sennheiser hd280 pros so I was familiar with that sound but I didn't particularly like them because the bass was lacking. I did some research and I stumbled upon some good reviews for the ath m50. I decided to go to the guitar center to see if I could try a pair out. The pair I tried was straight out of the box so I wasn't very impressed with the sound but I thought that I would give them a chance to burn in before I would make any judgements. When I took them home, I compared them with my ad700. In comparison, the bass on the ath m50s was more punchy however the sound stage on the m50s was smaller and the ad700s sound more open and not as "in your face" as the m50s sound. I can say though that both pairs produce sounds that I like to call smooth as silk. They are very pleasant on your ears and I'm able to listen to either pair for hours, though the ad700s are much more comfortable due to the wing support system. Overall, I can say that if you have the cash, buy both the ad700s and the m50s you will not regret either purchase but I have been using the m50s more recently.

I'd also like to add that I was able to do a side by side comparison of my m50s with the beats by dr dre headphones. I decided to go to best buy one day and I brought my m50s. I went up to the beats station and was able to plug in my m50s to the same source as the beats. I can say that the beats produced a louder sound out of the same source but I thought the bass was a little over exaggerated and the focus on the bass, in my opinion, made the music lose some character. I believe that the beats would not be suited for long listening periods. I thought that the m50s produced enough bass to hold its own against the beats while maintaining detail and they also maintained a pleasant listening experience. If you are considering the beats, I'll tell you that they aren't worth their price at $300 USD, plus I think it is kind of dumb that they need batteries. At $109, the m50s are definitely worth it and I would easily pick them over the beats by dr dre.

Read my review of the ath ad700s!

wow..

let me start off by saying I am not an audiophile, I have never had quality headphones and have only heard bose qc3s, and dr.dre beats a couple of times. I thought they were quite good, but overpriced. After reading all of the wonderful reviews on these headphones I decided to try them out, and boy was I glad I made this purchase. Changed my views on music for sure. Base is what stands out the most to me, it is so clear and crisp and powerful at the same time. The highs, the mids, and the lows are exceptional as well. I listen to these on my ipod, unamped and they sound wonderful. Bottom line : great for the price, bit bulky and not meant for public use(or portable), but everything else is exceptional and definitely worth the money!!

Also I have never written a review about anything on amazon before, this was my first for a reason.
