Pretty good for a Version 1 UMPC
Today is may 30 2007 and as of this moment, there are a lot of other UMPC's in the market that have built in sliding keyboards, keys on either side of the screen etc etc. So why
Q1P
Vista
?.
1. I knew that I can upgrade the
RAM
upto 2 GB(Max)
2. Agreed that a Keyboard is very useful. You can get the keyboard experience by buying the optional Organizer combo. This means when you want to use the
touch
screen for data entry(ideal when you are walking or on the move), your UMPC feels thinner.
3. What are you going to use it for? - I think the ideal usage of a UMPC is for GPS, Browsing on the Go(Using a USB Broadband card from Verizon or Sprint) , I use it for creating graphics( I have corel and a few other image creating/editing software). If you want, you can go ahead and install visual studio etc etc, but that will slow the UMPC down. It is not the same as a laptop(unless you have a 2 GB Ram, a lighter Virus scanner and a few other tweaks).
4. Also maake sure that you get the 6 cell battery for the UMPC. The 8 cell databank is too expensive. The 6 Cell battery will give you 5 - 6 hours or sometimes even more work time. When on battery and on the move, please disable your Wifi Adapter and Bluetooth service so that your battery can run longer.
These are some of the few changes I did to my UMPC and I am a happy jack I guess.

Excellent little computer
So I recently purchased this model before a two week trip to Europe and I am so glad I did! The unit it very light, very portable, and when used properly it will last for a few hours of use
I'll comment on specific features:
-
Vista
Operating Sytem: love it and the
Q1P
handles it just fine (no aero mode mind you). The OS goes in and comes out of Hibernation relatively quickly and the Tablet/
Mobile
features of Vista make it easy to manage input and power settings
- Performance: before my trip i loaded up Visual Studio 2005 and AQL Server 2005 Express and the Q1 handles both, and at the same time, very well. One huge strike against the unit, and this is more a problem with the media probably, is the absolutely horrible "write" speed to a CF card that I have inserted into the top of the unit. It's practically unusable a second
Hard
Drive
as writing to it is an absolute chore.
- Battery Life (using the included standard battery): in "Power Save" mode I can squeak out ~2.5 hours of use depending on what I am doing. The battery was quick to charge when sitting in "hibernate" and plugged in, i'd say it was fully charged in just a few hours. Also kind of neat was a built in meter right on the battery itself which is accessed by setting up the Q1's stand and then you could push a little button on the battery and it will show you power level on it's LEDs
- "AVS" Prog
ram
: Reading about this, it is supposed to be a mini OS that can play movies and music and show pictures without having to go into the Main OS, but I could never get it to not fire up Vista before running.... so basically it's useless for lack of a better description
- Wireless/Internet: Bluetooth, Wireless a/b/g, and a direct Ethernet connection all work very well, I had no problems connecting to anything on my travels
- Data Entry: Not really a big fan of the "Orgami" keyboard program, but the Tablet keyboard entry with the included stylus works well, but for serious typing a bluetooth/USB keyboard and/or mouse is recommended. I has purchased a ThinkOutside Stowaway blueooth keyboard and it hooks right up with no issues
- "Coolness" factor: Didn't buy it for this by any means, but while on my trip I had a ton of people ask me about it and I was all too happy to show them what it was and what it did... it really is a full blown computer, just smaller :-)
- Outputs: Sound from the built in speakers is adequate, the unit also has a VGA output for an external monitor, which outputs to my 19" widescreen with no issues, also has two USB 2.0 ports and a the before mentioned (but i'm saying useless) CF slot
