THE BEST OF A REAL ARTIST!

I guess I already wrote everything there is to know about Monna Bell, her significance as a unique artist and the importance of these Hispavox recordings. (See my review of Monna Bell Los EPs, Volume 1)

In the first volume, Miss Bell recorded most of the tunes with orchestras conducted by two Spanish musical geniuses, Augusto Algueró Jr. and Gregorio García Segura, who were also responsible for the arrangements. In this second volume there is a great sampling of Monna's work with Cuban musical legend Bebo Valdés and this collaboration is as exciting as the previous.

The songs are typical of the Monna Bell repertoire including jazzy tunes with romantic boleros, European ballads, and those crazy novelty numbers that were so popular in the 60s and were probably imposed upon the vocalist by the record producers. After all, "Un Telegrama", her biggest hit ever, was indeed a novelty tune. No matter the genre, Miss Bell shines through all but; of course, she excels in the love songs.

I recommend this volume to be purchased with the first volume, both on sale in this page so that you will own a decent career retrospective on one of the greatest singers that ever did it. Unfortunately, Miss Bell took an early retirement and we are left wondering what she could do today with good material, good arrangements and good musical backing. Her latest effort was the 1993 CD "Ahora" badly written and produced by Juan Gabriel and while Miss Bell's voice is in top form, the material is so helplessly bad that not even she could save it. Keep away from it and stick with these Hispavox classics. You'll never be sorry.
