Really Fun, Some Improvement in Range

I thoroughly enjoyed this CD-Rom set. I am uploading videos to YouTube with a sample of me singing "Amazing Grace" before lessons and after 1 week of lessons. When I've done it for a full month I'll upload that sample too. So you can be the judge if I've made any improvement :) I can't give you the link directly b/c Amazon apparently deletes review links, but you can search YouTube for "LearningAllTheTime" and find my uploads.

So how does this program work? In a nutshell, you play the diagnostic CD, which will ultimately direct you to a specific series of exercises for your voice.

The diagnostic CD walks you through a series of scales. You listen to a scale, you sing AND record the scale, then you listen to two incorrect ways to sing the scale. You decide which of the three versions of the scale most closely resembles your recorded voice. Depending on your answer, you are directed to a second diagnostic scale, and so on. At the end of the series of scales, you are given your lesson plan (CD #/Track #) for the next week. Then you run the diagnostic test again, and get your next lesson plan, and so on, for a month.

The "How To Sing Any Song" CD gives you technical tips on how to hit notes that you may have trouble hitting. It is not advice or tips on how to project or emote or move anything like that.

So, does Singers Advantage actually work? Well, I enjoy the exercises very much, and I can feel my muscles stretching and getting stronger. It has improved my range slightly, and helped me move a bit more smoothly from chest to head voice.

However, Singers Advantage doesn't really address breath control, which I know I dearly need help with. It probably doesn't address a lot of other things too, that I am, at this point, unaware need addressing because I haven't plunked down the money for real voice lessons yet.

Yet I am nevertheless quite pleased with this purchase. I purchased it on sale for a fraction of the cost, so it wasn't much more expensive than an ordinary CD. I really enjoy the exercises, and my voice range has extended at least 2 notes on the upper end. And I now have a series of fun warm-up exercises targeted to my voice that I can do before I sing with a choir.

I would imagine it is very difficult for a CD-Rom, no matter how well designed, to do what an actual singing coach can do. At least Singer's Advantage tries not to be a one-size fits all lesson plan.
