Great printer

What I like about this all-in-one:

1. excellent print quality
2. fast
3. selects correct media automatically (DVD, 4x6 photo, letter-paper) and has separate trays for the two kinds of paper
4. no clogged print nozzles (so far)
5. good scanner (not great, but good enough)
6. "free" color copier (I only wanted a DVD and photo printer, so all the other features are bonuses)
7. low cost, but not in any way "cheap"
8. superb DVD or CD) printer
9. fast (worth repeating)

This replaced an Epson Stylus Photo R300, which I used primarily to print DVD's, and secondarily as a photo printer. At the time, I was thrilled to be able to print DVD's, and was also very happy with the photo print quality. But, as time went by, the print nozzles clogged more and more often, and clearing them used 5-10% of the ink in all 6 cartridges, even if only one cartridge's nozzles were clogged. The DVD feeder was always fickle, and became more so as the printer "matured".

Eventually, the ever-more-frequent nozzle cleaning resulted in a message saying "the printer has reached the end of its useful life". This meant the surplus-ink reservoir was full, even though the rest of the printer was not worn out. Of course, the real cause was that the nozzles clogged too easily.

I replaced the Epson R300 with a newly refurbished R320 (all bought through Amazon), only to find that the new-ish printer's nozzles began to clog immediately. (This is happening with genuine, new Epson cartridges, not 3rd party or refills.)

So, I tried the HP (a C5250, which seems to be the same as the C5280). It cost a lot less than an Epson, and was returnable if necessary.

Well, what an eye-opener! It prints DVD's at least 3 times faster than the Epson, its DVD handling/feeding is far superior to Epson's, and the print quality on the DVD's looks just about the same (which I really didn't expect).

The photo printing is fast (again, 3x faster than Epson) and the quality is excellent. Under a 20-power magnifier, I can see that the Epson ink pattern is far superior to H-P's (the Epson dots are actually barely visible dashes, while the H-P dots are real dots). But, to the unaided eye, the prints all look the same: about as good as drug-store prints.

So far, no clogged nozzles, and my experience with other H-P printers suggests that there will be fewer of them than with Epson. If/when they do happen, I can remove the cartridge and try soaking the head on a wet towel. If that doesn't work, I can replace the cartridge. That strategy doesn't work with Epson, because the nozzles are not in the cartridges: they're a permanent, unremovable part of the printer itself.

I'm just about completely pleased with the printer, so why didn't I give it 5 stars? Mostly because the scanner is a bit slow. The H-P is replacing not just an Epson R300, but also an Epson Perfection 2450 scanner, which is a really, really good scanner.

I LOVE this machine

I received the HP All-in-One for a birthday present and I am so glad that I did. It is very, very well made, quite sturdy. I can do just about everything that I need to do with one push of a button, from printing photos, to scanning, to making a DVD label. How great is that?
I have found the quality to be very good and it is just so simple to use.
I am not a computer wiz, but I installed the software mayself with absolutely no problem and away I was printing in a very short time.
I highly recommend this product. It is very quiet and does the jobs you need done ver well. Give it a try.

Well designed and compact, recommend the HP 5280

We had a project of printing over 100 CD disks. We owned an Epson R300 and had used it for this purpose a couple of times. We couldn't get it to print on CD's. After spending several days on it, support was useless, we decided to try the HP C5280 and not buy another Epson. We found the HP 5280 very nicely designed. Easy installation and set up and prints beautifully on CD's. It prints beautiful photos also. We have only had it a week but so far so good. I would recommend this printer if you want an inexpensive, nice photo and CD printer. It also scans and copies and prints photos directly from the memory card. For the reviewer that was upset that a power cord didn't come with it, I would say when was the last time you purchased a printer? They are almost never included. The ink jet cartridges seem to be lasting a long time. Not like my Canon all in one 780 that needs a new cartridge on a regular basis and I don't print that much. As far as the EPson R 300, we are giving it away. My husband has an HP 1150C that we purchased years ago. An antique in todays world of printing and it is still going strong and we have never had a problem with it. I would recommend HP printers and I would recommend the Canon also except for fact that it is an ink hog.

Great Value/Quality for the Price!

I've not been a fan of "all-in-one" machines in the past, since you would assume you're comprimising on the quality a bit to get the combo convenience. I was VERY pleasantly surprised with the printing quality and number of features on this printer! It will do manual duplexing (steps you the process of reloading paper to print side 2), prints on CD-ROM's, photo printing (beware -- printing more than a few photos will seriously eat up ink!), scanner is excellent quality, even provides software for text-recognition. All-in-all, I'm thrilled with this printer. I'm pretty much a techno-junkie, wanting all the latest toys, and this one has satisfied me thus far (have had it since Feb 2008).

The only folks I wouldn't recommend this for -- those looking to print all the photos out .. I would tell them to keep looking for a small photo-dedicated printer that won't use so much ink. We print just a few photos here and there for special projects, or when we're in a rush to see them from our digital camera, and the big photo orders go to either a local or online processor for discounted prints.

This printer is an excellent choice for all-around use, I've used it produce professional quality catalogs, brochures, invitations, etc.
