It worked great right out of the box - Take that Sony!

I had purchased a Sony DBP-S301 player a few months ago. Wouldn't play half of the movies I tried. They said - 'needs a firmware upgrade'. It had no ethernet port like my Toshiba HD35 so I went through this whole, burn a DVD upgrade, which took several hours. The unit was still buggy. Returned it.

Bought the Samsung 1400 because it supports TrueHD and other HD audio formats plus it has an ethernet port for upgrades like my Toshiba does. Much to my shock, it worked right out of the box, plays everything we have tried to play on it. Looks great, Sounds great.

With a player this good for this price there is no need to buy anything more expensive.

Note, the new BD-P1500 has given up some of it's audio capabilites for the second video processor - which no one will probably use. Didn't seem like a good tradeoff so I bought the 1400.

OK, but...

With firmware 080114.01_XAA...

Seems OK. Plays normal DVDs OK, with better quality than a straight SDTV DVD player. Plays the three Blu-Ray disks that we've tried. UI is straightforward enough. Eject is about 8 seconds.

HOWEVER... it doesn't seem to have discrete on/off remote codes. That's just inexcusable for a modern device, and makes controlling a complete system using a high-end remote like a Logitech Harmony problematic. (Yes, I know the Harmony will remember the state of a power toggle... that theory works better in theory than in practice.)

Perhaps the latest firmware includes discrete on/off codes, and perhaps I could get Samsung to tell Logitech the codes, but that's a lot of hassle that I just don't want.

Back to the store it goes.

Not bad, as long as you have broad-band

Out of the box this device would not play any regular DVD I tried in it.
After updating the software over the internet, a simple task to perform that took about 20 minutes on a fast internet connection, it plays everything I've tried in it, even disks that would not play in other players.

Good basic BD Player

I gave three stars and explaining pros and cons:

Pros:
- Right price
- Excellent picture

Cons:
- Not satisfactory audio (even used the Optical cable)
- Doesn't remember the chapter when stopped for a while and play back.

Does the Job

I picked this up during a Goldbox sale. The picture is stunning when connected via HDMI with 1080P, as you would expect with most any Blu-Ray DVD player. It is a bit large, and the pause button will only pause for 5 minutes before reverting back to the start of the disk. Also, if you hit the stop button, it does not resume from where you left off like other SD DVD players. I knew all these things before I purchased so I feel I made an informed choice. I just have to plan accordingly as I watch a movie. Given those flaws, it was worth it for the price ($267) but I would not have purchased it for much more. Nearly every movie in my Netflix Queu converted over to Blu-Ray once I enabled that as an option, which validated my decision to buy even more. Updating the firmware was easy, I just unplugged my ethernet cable from by Xbox and plugged it into the back of the DVD player and followed the instructions. The update was easy enough although my remote wouldn't work for a while afterwards. All is well now.

The technology is still young, as demonstrated with the firmware updates and the pause stuff I mentioned above, but it was worth it to me to roll with the punches to watch movies at their best.
