Sold basic business notebook

I had a Hewlett Packard DV6131om which I bought about a week before Vista was unleasehd on the unsuspecting public. The HP was similar to this computer with some nice entertainment features such as dedicated media buttons, HP's media center and XP MCE. It was stolen.

So, I bought a HP DV6423om with a dual core AMD processor and larger hard drive. It came loaded with Vista Home Premium. Vista would not run much of the sofware I need for business purposes. I went to Starbucks and inadvertently poured coffee on it. HP wants several hundred dollars more to fix it than it cost originally.

Being in need of a computer, I went to several office stores and saw a version of the R61i with a 15.4" screen. It was running XP. I started bowing to it, saying in "XP" in a whispter. It was a moment of great joy and reverence.

This isn't an entertainment system. It is a good basic business system. It certainly is not the sleekest computer in the world. It is very solidly built, with metal clamps holding the screen to the case. The keyboard doesn't move when you press keys. It parks the hard drive so you don't damage your data if it senses a sudden change in momentum. Like old IBM and Compaq laptops, it has the red button in the middle of the keyboard which acts as a mouse as well as a touchpad. Battery life is a bit short at an hour and a half to two hours.

The computer has a fingertip reader which is used to log on and in conjunction with security features. It is somewhat problematic when logging on after the machine goes into screen-saver mode. Other than that, it is nice to simply wipe your finger across the keyboard to log in.

It is not the fastest computer in the world, and I would prefer 2Gig of memory instead of one. Actually, by todays standards, it is a bit slow. It gets the following benchmarks:

Performance Test 6.1 = 375
CPU Mark = 711
3dMark 2001 = 3625
3dMark 2003 = 1100
PC Wizard 2008 = 839

5/29/08 -- Using the Lenovo ThinkVantage system restore revealed an error in the operating system. I reloaded the operating system to its original state, spent hours upgrading the operating system and added an extra gig of memory. Performance is substantially improved and now gets the following:

PC Wizard 2008 = 2457
PassMark 6.1 = 380 and
3dMark 2001 = 4107
3dMark 2003 = 1527
