Good looking phone-nice reception

After running my Motorola V-557 thru the wash, I was forced to get a new one, and, unfortunately, locked into another 2 year contract. I have been with AT&T for 15 years, and not planning on changing. As far as the phone goes, it is nice looking, but as noted by other reviewers, shows fingerprints and smudges. I have mine in a Body Glove brand case, which I think gives the best fit and protection. The reception is great! My old phones signal was weak, and at times non-existant out in the country where we live. The Razr2 has a decent signal at all times. Battery life as compared to my 557 is bad, but I knew that after reading other reviews. I simply have to charge it more often, which is no big deal. The flat buttons take getting used to, and if you text much, you will get used to them. Having 5 kids who want to communicate via text, I was forced to learn how. My phone gets raves from all my kids 18-23 yrs. Two have older razrs and want to upgrade. My wife loved mine, and now she has one too. Phone is heavy and appears to be quite sturdy, and that is important to me. Far better constructed than many of the free phones you can get. HIGHLY recommend using Amazon to buy your phone from. They beat the pants off AT&T prices at their stores. I tried to get AT&T to match the prices, and was met with a resounding NO. Apparently they are happy with locking me into another 2 year contract and could care less where I buy the phone. I believe you will be happy with this phone, and suggest you go to an AT&T store to check out the phone first, then make an informed buy from whom-ever you choose. Picture ID is a nice feature and highly recommend getting the SanDisc memory chip for extra pics and music. Again, you will get the best prices on Amazon for almost all accesseries, all with NO bidding on items! Nice! Note to AT&T---you should consider rewarding long-time customers who upgrade with shorter than 2 year contracts and how about INCLUDING a car charger with the phone! As far as the camera goes, I think the pics are great. Really does well on close-ups.

Nice phone and great AT&T service

I have had the phone for 5 months. It's really a solid built metal phone. It is slightly heavier than the average phone and just feels like you got your moneys worth unlike some of these plastic junk phones. I only use the phone for talking (no internet or games) so I can not comment on that aspect of it. The sound quality is top notch. The camera is ok for a phone but do not expect to take nice printable photos and there is no flash. Get a real camera for that. MP3 playback is surprisingly clear and loud! Not bad for a phone. It supports Micro SD cards. The phone is slimmer than the original RAZR and it fits in my jean pockets perfect. This is my favorite phone so far and its cool looking. Some people wine about the physical hinge point but I don't understand it. The phone is built well and unless you use it to hammer nails it should easily last for the 2 yr contract.

Cons:
-It shows finger prints easily everywhere.
-It has a Micro USB (not Mini USB) so it will not use a standard USB cable unless you use the included adapter.
-The charging port has a annoying cover on it. You have to remove it everytime you want to charge or link to a PC.

I had one problem with the phone. The receiver ear speaker somehow failed after 5 months. From what I have read this is not common at all. I called AT&T and they sent me a new phone under warranty within 3 days. I sent my old phone back after I got the new one. GREAT service so far and AT&T really went the extra mile to keep me happy!

Exceeds expectations

There are a lot of reviews of this phone, so I'll just cover the things I found exceptional or contrary to others experience.

This phone exceeded my expectations. Call clarity is by far the best of any cell phone I have had. The first three people I called mentioned how good it sounded - without any prompting by me.

Color - to be honest I was expecting a pink phone based on the pictures at Amazon. It is really a very nice dark maroon color that looks very nice.

The phone is heavier than other phones and a bit bigger. But the phone is metal - not plastic so of course it is heavier. It is also a bit larger than other phones, but I like that as well. It feels more like a phone than a toy.

Hinge - I cannot imagine this hinge failing. It is a metal hinge which seems very solid.

As others have mentioned, the charging port it a bit of nusiance. I can image the cover eventually breaking.

It is a fingerprint magnet.

The battery cover is a bear to get off. I almost took it to the store to get my micro sd card installed.

With the micro SD card installed, I can now stop carrying my MP3 player around.

Now ATT versus Verizon. I've been a Verizon customer for years. I never switched even though I couldn't use my phone at home. It seemed to work ok everywhere else. I have a second residence for work and the Verizon phone worked there - until I moved up the street a mile or so - then it was nothing but useless. I also was dropping a lot of calls on the highway. Almost every time I switched towers.

I took a shot on a carrier switch. I'm glad I did. My phone is now useable at both of my residences and I have yet to drop a call in a month of use. I definately have "more bars in more places" with ATT. Sometimes I have to walk around a bit to get a stronger signal, but once the call connects, it really seems to lock on.

On the down side, ATT charges you to back up your contacts and that was free with Verizon. ATT also seems to charge a bit more for things than Verizon did.

In conclusion, I'm extremely happy with this purchase and carrier.

WOWSER - this is a gem

I came from a phone that was just a phone - no bells and whistles. THEN, I got this phone as a result of the great price at Amazon.

I haven't been as impressed with a piece of technology since my first Apple IIe. It is a marvel: the camera is fun to use, we now instant message (2 old married folks acting like kids (like), send email, surf the web on our phone (who woulda thought) and generally call and receive calls with a clarity that rivals or exceeds our land line.

I couldn't be happier with this product.

A few comments on the previous reviews:

1. Have not seen battery use as a problem but I do not spend 24 hours each day with the phone in my ear or texting incessantly.

2. I have no complaints about the hinge on the cover. But, if you flip your phone open with flair and a flick of your wrist each time and expect it to last over time, it could break. Just treat it with respect and it will last.

3. Sound quality is excellent. Each call I make, someone comments on the clarity.

4. Camera is very good - day or night. I have taken pictures of my black dog in twilight and my wife is using that as her wallpaper. Very cool, very good detail. It has multiple settings so I believe someone's problem with green pictures is due to their being on the "green picture" setting. Don't know why anyone wants their subjects to all appear as Kermit the Frog, but that is another story.

5. Battery cover hasn't fallen off.

6. No problem with the micro SD card behind the battery. I suppose if you use 2 GB of storage each day it would be a pain. If you do that, maybe you should consider buying a small digital camera for your shirt pocket or purse.

7. Plenty of aftermarket products available at very reasonable prices either on Amazon or by searching for "Razr V9" in your favorite search engine. Just be careful about the V9 and V9M differences. Some products that work for the V9M don't work with the V9.

8. Had some delivery issues between AT&T and Amazon. I must say that they were 80% AT&T and 20% Amazon. But, all ended well when the phones were received.

Just love it, really, really do.

After creating a gadget/fashion icon in the original MOTORAZR, Motorola has upped the ante with the new RAZR2 V9 with cutting edge technology and enhanced features that make it even easier to use. Offered via AT&T, the RAZR2 V9 offers super-fast downloads and multimedia streaming via AT&T's 3G HSDPA/UMTS network. It's fully loaded with an arsenal of digital tools, including a 2-megapixel camera/camcorder, Bluetooth connectivity for streaming music and photo printing, MicroSD memory card expansion, dual color LCD screens, e-mail access, digital audio player, and full duplex speakerphone. And speaking of cutting edge, the phone's stainless steel internal frame and cast aluminum housing support makes the RAZR2 V9 stronger and more durable than its predecessor.

Sleeker, smarter, stronger: the RAZR2 V9 boasts a durable stainless steel frame and chemically hardened glass displays. AT&T Service
The RAZR2 V9 can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. The AT&T 3G network uses HSDPA/UMTS technology (High Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telephone System), making it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless services with speeds up to 3.6 Mbps. It also gives AT&T the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services. In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Providing average data speeds between 75-135Kbps, it's fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services, including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go.

With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Cellular Video (CV) service and the Internet while on the go. Cellular Video features content from CNN, The Weather Channel, iFilm, Comedy Central and exclusive premium content from HBO and much more. It also features AT&T Mobile Music, which provides access to the Napster subscription music as well as Music ID song-recognition software, music videos and The Buzz music news portal. The handset is MobiTV and XM Radio Mobile-capable, so you can enjoy streaming live TV and digital radio all in one device. (A MEdia Max subscription bundle is recommended for accessing AT&T's Internet, video, and music services.)

With its quad-band connectivity, this phone communicates over GSM/GPRS networks and AT&T offers voice roaming in more than 190 countries and data roaming in more than 130 countries.

Phone Features
Designed to be even sharper than before, the RAZR2 V9 shaves two millimeters from the original MOTORAZR. Its one-piece housing has no parting lines (meaning fewer chances of break points) and the cast aluminum hinge underwent more than 100,000 lab tests to ensure durability. Even the exterior camera lens is stronger, as it is made with chemically hardened glass. Despite its slimmer profile, the RAZR2 V9 offers enhanced dual screens that make the phone seem larger. The 2.2-inch internal screen offers twice the resolution of the original MOTORAZR while the 2-inch external screen is great for checking caller photo ID, easily reading incoming text messages, and controlling music playback through onscreen controls. Other Motorola-engineered enhancements include: Upgraded Interface: With the redesigned, more intelligent interface, you'll be able to search for contacts faster and avoid duplicate entries for the same person while allowing contacts to have multiple numbers. The customizable main menu means you're never more than 2 to 3 clicks away from your favorite applications. And text messaging is easier, with the V9 recognizing what type of message you are sending. CrystalTalk Technology: This innovative feature automatically accounts for background noise during a call and adjusts the audio quality based on ambient noise conditions to provide the optimal conversational experience. CrystalTalk also reduces the volume of the background noise picked up by the microphone during a call, making it possible to be more easily heard over the phone while in a noisy environment. Talk to Me: Originally designed to address the needs of those with vision impairment, the RAZR2 V9 is able to read the phone's interactive menus, contacts, messages and more aloud--adding convenience to your on-the-go lifestyle. SMS messages on the phone can be read and replied to with pre-programmed text messages without ever having to open up the flip. Haptics: Motorola has incorporated breakthrough haptics technology--an interface that creates tactile feedback--that provides vibrating feedback in response to your finger taps. When combined with the virtual music keys, the haptics technology helps you to effortlessly control music playback.

The 2-megapixel camera includes an 8x digital zoom and it can automatically snap up to eight new pictures--letting you choose the best image from a complete series of pictures. You can even print photos wirelessly to a Bluetooth-compatible printer with just a few menu selections. It provides four resolution choices (from 320 x 240 to 1600 x 1200 pixels) and also features a self-timer, free memory space indicator, color effects, night mode for low-light shots, and five shutter sounds (with a silent mode).

The RAZR2 V9 is also an impressive video camcorder, providing up to QCIF resolution (176 x 144 pixels). It also gives you the option of choosing the video format, which offers different frame rates--25 fps for MPEG and H263 and 15 fps for WMV and Real. You can record video for as long as you have available space on your MicroSD memory card.

Control music playback with the virtual digital audio player buttons on the V9's external screen, which includes tactile feedback. With up to 2 GB of storage (via optional MicroSD memory card), the RAZR2 V9 can store up to 1000 of your favorite songs. It offers compatibility with Microsoft Windows Media Player 11, enabling easy synchronization and transfer between phone and PC. You'll be able to modify music playback with the flip closed thanks to the virtual contextual music controls that appear on the external screen. And you can keep playing music even while surfing the web, sending text messages, or even using the camera.

This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.

The RAZR2 V9 features a full HTML browser (Opera 8.5) that takes advantage of high-speed wireless data connections for faster, bigger and richer web surfing experience. Built-in e-mail functionality (POP/IMAP/SMTP) combined with MobileSync software provides easy, PC-like access to both personal and corporate e-mail accounts and calendars.

Other features include: 45 MB internal flash memory Up to 1000 contact entries, each with up to six numbers and two email addresses Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate) with profiles for communication headsets, handsfree, stereo music streaming, audio/video remote control, printing, dial-up networking, and file transfer USB 2.0 wired connectivity, with mass storage capability Includes Bowling3D and Diner Dash games, with more downloadable via AT&T Polyphonic and MP3 ringtones Voice command and dialing, as well as ability to record voice memos PIM functions including calendar, calculator, alarm clock, and world clock
