Conversion adapter and tele for A650
The backordered adapter took over a month to get. I ran out of patience with Amazon and final bought one from another online retailer. The plastic adapter fits okay, but there is minor slop in the fit. The tele is large, heavy and vignettes the image until the
lens
is zoomed to near the maximum. The images are very sharp at this point, add a bit of
digital
zoom and still get a decent image at 24X. It's useful for specialty shots but I'd recommend if you primarily want long zoom, get a digital camera with an integrated 18X zoom.
LA-DC58J Review
The LA-
DC58J
is and adapter that is designed specifically for the
Canon
A650IS
camera to allow the use/attachment of the Canon WC-DC58B Wide angle and TC-DC58C Telephoto
Lens
es. This adapter is made of black plastic, is fairly sturdy, and has 58 mm plastic threads for the attachment of the lenses. Attachment to the camera body is quick and easy as it attaches with about a ¼ turn in a quick lock attachment. Once attached to the camera body is has a tiny bit of play/looseness but is not loose enough to be of a concern. See the picture I posted for how it looks installed. Note however that because the threads are plastic and you have to be fairly careful to not cross thread or over tighten the Lenses.
I have the Canon Wide angle lens which is fairly large and heavy and its body and threads are made of metal. The Canon WC-DC58B Wide Angle lens thread design has some metal that extends beyond the threads which provides a bit of a guide to make threading into the
LA-DC58J
adapter easier and with less chance of cross threading. I found that the Canon Wide Angle lens screws into the LA-DC58J adapter with ease.
The LA-DC58J provides one bonus that is not mentioned in the Canon documentation. You can use this adapter to add 58mm filters to your A650IS. You might want to purchase this adapter for this reason alone! However, you can not install the Wide Angle or Telephoto lenses with a filter installed on the LA-DC58J adapter. For the filters I used, the filter's female thread depth will not engage the male Wide Angle lens' threads. This is due to that bit of extra metal that extends beyond the threads on the Wide Angle adapter. I suspect the Telephoto lens has the same issue. Canon's documentation also states that you can not install a filter on these lenses.
I give it 4 stars out of 5 because it is made of plastic and not metal like some of the other Canon adapters.

Canon LA-DC58J Adapter for A650IS
$25 is a lot for a piece of plastic. If you don't already have filters it will cost much more than $25. It seems well made but you must exercise care when screwing a metal filter into the adapter, the threads are plastic. With a filter attached there can be slight cropping of the corners at the wide end. Being plastic it adds little weight to the camera, but does increase the bulk. The adapter does partially block the viewfinder, but I find the screen is bright and detailed enough for most conditions. The
A650IS
is a relatively large, slow point and shoot camera that excels at taking pictures in adequate light (ISO 200 or lower). This adapter (and filters) make the camera more flexible and adaptable to conditions. The bottom line is I can take much better pictures using this adapter (and filters) and still have a compact camera that weighs just over a pound.

Causes a shadow when using the flash but seems to be a good product.
Got this to hold a UV filter (mainly to protect main
lens
).
Converter attached to my
Canon
A650 easily and correctly. Seems to be well made. No problems. UV filter attached to converter easily and securely. No problems.
Have had it only a few weeks so cannot report on durability other than to say it's still functioning as expected.
HOWEVER, when using the flash I remove the converter (easy and quick) because it causes a shadow on the lower right side of photo. When done with flash I reattach the converter (again, easy and quick). In order to protect the main lens with a UV filter I must have the converter. The shadow problem is a very small problem that can easily be overcome. Protecting the main lens is more important.
