Nice features, some downsides
Pros:
-
Wireless
-Quality face buttons and joysticks
-(Almost) Completely mappable: Every button, side trigger, d-pad, and joystick direction can be assigned a different function. However, ZR and ZL cannot be assigned separate functions, as when you reassign one, the other will change to match it. All other button mappings work fine.
-Works as both a GameCube controller and a Classic controller
-Rumble works too
Cons:
-VERY small. It will take quite a while to get used to the grip, unless you have tiny hands. The battery pack on the back is very fat, and makes it hard to get a grip on. I would recommend using a regular, comfortable GameCube controller for GC games unless you really want to custom map the buttons or need wireless and can't afford a Wavebird. It's still a viable option for Wiiware games though, because the official GC controller's d-pad is a little too small and far down.
-D-pad is a little oversensitive. Often thinks you're pressing diagonally when you're trying to press a straight direction. However, oversensitivity is better than it being non-responsive.
-L and R buttons have no "click". You squish down for a partial press, and squish harder for a full press. No click to give indication of when it's fully pressed. This is mostly only a problem with GameCube games that have a different reaction when you press or "click" the button, like Super Mario Sunshine.
-Sometimes confusing to get the controller to connect, but unplugging and replugging into the console will usually solve the problem.
Overall I think it's worthwhile, but keep in mind the flaws that aren't obvious by just looking at a picture.

Nice but frustrating
I like the way that the controller feels in my hands. The buttons seem to mostly be in good places for me - I do find the X and Y buttons difficult to hit without fully shifting my hand, but I think that would be a problem no matter what. I don't have too much difficulty hitting the Map or Turbo buttons, but it definitely confused the heck out of me the first several times I did it. Getting it to revert back to normal mode is difficult, so I usually end up turning it off then on again. It's really nice to have a
wireless
controller and not have to worry about cords all over the place.
The biggest flaw with this controller is the left control stick. When I first used it, it was incredibly difficult to control - it was extremely sensitive. I've had it for a few weeks now, and it continues to be very sensitive, mostly, but it doesn't distinguish between 'go straight forward' and 'veer slightly right' very well at all. I've been playing Zelda Ocarina of Time (n64 game), and I find that I keep recentering my view so that I am looking straight at the direction I need to go. This makes it difficult to impossible for me to complete timed mazes. Yesterday, I finally gave up and bought the Wii Classic Controller - White (Japanese Version) (it's available now, and not on back-order).
If you've got really good finger coordination, or are playing games that don't require fine motion with the left control stick, then this is an inexpensive controller that might be good for you. Otherwise, save yourself some money and buy a nicer controller.
