Best Large Consumer Item Ive ever purcahsed

This TV is AMAZING. I use it primarily as my Computer monitor. I dont understand why people are confined to a computer desk anymore. After buying this monitor I play from the couch. Theres no better way to use your computer. It works Amazingly well with the PC, and Xbox360 looks Fantastic in High Def. Highly Recommended!! I will definatly buy another Westinghouse TV in the Future.

Best bang-for-buck LCD TV on the market

First, a brief note on the reviewer's experience below whose TV's power supply and light sources went bad: I don't think that experience is typical at all.

I did my research with this set. I looked for HDTVs for 4 months or so, and had more-or-less settled on the Sharp Aquos line (and also resigned myself to paying $3000+ for a 42" TV) when I went to Best Buy with a friend to do some more looking around.

The Westinghouse caught our eye at the same time. We wandered over to it and were very impressed by the quality of its HD picture. It was side-by-side next to a Sony Wega 27" TV, which seemed to have better analog performance, but was actually very comparable for HD.

I looked at those two pictures side-by-side for a long time. That $1499 sale price tag sure did seem enticing. Ah, what the heck, I figured. Let's see how it does. If I don't like it, I can always return it.

It's been 5 months since I bought it. And it's a great TV.

Pros: HD picture quality! It has a plethora of inputs, and 2 DVI inputs. Great contrast ratio--guests will exclaim at the quality of fine white fonts on a dark screen in a program's credits in INHD, for instance. Did I mention how cheap it is?

Cons: analog picture is bleah. Blacks are a little soggy, whites can be washed out sometimes, too. Edge lighting is a bit uneven. In a dark room, my set has a brighter "blob" in the middle of the screen. It's not noticeable unless you know it's there, though. The remote is dinky and should be scrapped for a decent universal ASAP.

Great value, not perfect

I read some good (but a year old) reviews about the LVM-37W1 and after my Sceptre 42" LCD TV ordered online from a wholesale retailer arrived broken, I had no patience to wait one more month, so I bought this 37" Westinghouse at a local store as an open box item for a nice price. I had it for almost a month and it is a great monitor considering the price.

However, since I bought this as my new TV, I was not totally happy with viewing cable, DVDs and calibration videos, so I returned it and bought the LVM-42W2 42", the newer generation Westinghouse 1080p monitor. Besides the better response time (8ms vs. 12ms.), the W2 series LCD monitors seem to have a much better picture in general. Although I'm not an experienced HDTV (re)viewer, I can tell the difference and the LVM-37W1 reminded me of the rear projection TVs, which are great but always have a dedicated dark section of the store. LVM-42W2 on the other hand looks like the plasma screens with much better black levels, sharpness and colors. If you use the factory default maximum backlight settings on W1, the blacks are not black but dark grey and when the picture goes dark, you can also see that the backlight is much stronger at each corner. Both flaws can be compensated by significantly lowering the default backlight setting from 100 to around 10, but then the picture loses the intensity and it looks more like on a rear projection monitor (but for this money you can get a good 46" DLP, non 1080p though).

A big annoyance of W1 is a very poor remote reception zone so whenever I was more than 6' away from it, I wasn't sure whether it was going to react.

Another reason why I decided to replace the 37" W1 with the 42" W2 is the fact that at full 1080p resolution you have to be pretty darn close to a 37" screen to be able to fully enjoy the high resolution details. 42" should allow you to sit back.

Both Westinghouse monitors have the 1080p resolution as the main advantage over most other plasma and LCD monitors. With LVM-37W1 you get best deal for the money, while LVM-42W2 is the best 1080p LCD you can find (meanwhile I have read that the above mentioned 42" Sceptre has bad black levels).
