A magazine with promise
I usually enjoy reading
CLASSIC
ROCK
every month at my local Borders magazine rack, but it's obvious there's favoritism towards certain groups and artists. For example, there's WAY TOO MUCH emphasise on Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, but hardly anything on Deep Purple. Aren't Purple considered one of the (un)holy trinity of british hard rock? It's really messed up that Zeppelin, as well as Plant and Page have made the cover numerous times but Deep Purple zero. Even Phil Lynott a.k.a. Mr. Thin Lizzy has made the cover a few times and still no Purple. Actually, Blackmore once made their cover but it was a special issue about rock's lost hereos. Hey, Classic Rock! Blackmore is doing quite well carving out yet another successful music career, which is something Jimmy Page can't seem to do. Are you getting my drift, this magazine is biased towards certain rock royalty. So be careful when subscribing, you may not like what you read.

The Best Rock Mag ever!
This really blows them all away, Blender, Rolling Stone, the old Circus and Creem magazines, the closest to it was Kerrang. They have the best articles and pictures, a great reviews section!. I'm glad Amazon offers a Subscription to it!. Try it, I'll bet you can't put it down!.
Classic Rock : A Must!

Rock
magazine could be considered a spin-off of Metal Hammer (which has been present since the 80's) since a former editor started the idea of a magazine focusing almost exclusively and dedicated to classic rock. The first issue came out in 1998 and while it was not going to last very long but the success it received made things otherwise. In fact Classic Rock now has it's own spin-off "Classic Rock presents: Prog" (for some reason there are no subscriptions to be found for this magazine as of yet, maybe eventually). The writers really care about rock music; they always come up with interesting articles and never fail to deliver month after month.
The magazine's attention is from the late 1960's to the early 90's but it also has features on new bands. Classic Rock focuses especially on the 70's arguably the best era of rock'n'roll. Yes it's a more expensive magazine than you would expect but I'll tell you, if you're a fan of that era of rock music it's all worth it because no one covers it like those guys writing do with this magazine. You always get a bonus with every single issue, it's often a CD but sometimes you get a DVD, a calendar or a poster, it's a nice extra and always great. 130+ pages each month of great articles, reviews and more.
I think this magazine is fantastically built; it gives all you could want and more! I know it sometimes repeat itself with perhaps a little too much articles on Led Zeppelin and other bands but it doesn't matter because Classic Rock magazine gets the point, big time. I feel it's better than every other magazine on the subject as this one is truly dedicated to rock'n'roll and other than Metal Hammer (which puts more emphasis on heavier bands and although it has the classic bands it also covers current bands), it's sister publication, there is not much worth buying if you're a fan of classic rock. This would the perfect gift for a fan of rock, nothing but the best of the best in the genre. Beware subscribing can create an addiction to this magazine!

Rock
has blossomed to be the premier `dad rock' magazine on the planet, though given how steadfastly it refuses to spend virtually any time on anything more recent than the end of the NWOBHM it may soon have to have the epithet of `grandad rock' magazine!
With well written (if sometimes rehashed) articles the magazine has a good reviews section and spends time reviewing reissues as well and hardly an issue goes by where you won't score yourself a free CD or even at times a free DVD which is a great way of finding out about new bands. Actually, while the magazine itself concentrates very hard on not stepping on the toes of it's sister magazine Metal Hammer the bands featured on their cover mount CD's are often very new and this is a nice juxtaposition. Many CD's have found their way onto my shelf due to the inclusion of a track on one of these free discs.
Another aspect I appreciate is the humour and the fact that the whole hard rock and heavy metal scene isn't taken too seriously. Joke captions and cheeky remarks are often the order of the day and many of the writers really do have very long and impressive CV's of hard rock and metal journalism. The whole thing is rounded off by live reviews, regular features that alternate over time and tasty photography.
As my tag line says, subscribe to this and Metal Hammer. And the reason for this is that the two complement each other, Metal Hammer being aimed at a younger readership who think Korn and the rest of the Adidas rock crowd are where metal music began whereas Classic Rock prefers to deal with the 70's. And some 70's stuff as well. And they'll occasionally spend a bit of time talking about the 70's. Actually, sometimes you wish they'd turn the spotlight of their quality journalistic onto some younger bands and fair play, the whole thing is a bit Brit-centric which is fair enough since that is where the magazine comes from and the European bands get short shrift. If you wanna find out about continental bands try Power Play.
All up I rarely miss an issue at my newsstand except when I can see all I'm in for is another love fest about one of the magazines pet 70's bands. Heartily recommended for the discerning older metal head or young pup that wants to catch some news about some of the bands that started it all.
