MAGNAVOX H2160MW9 DVD Recorder

This DVD Recorder works as advertised. It is very intuitive to operate. I was impatient when ordering and couldn't wait a month for the 360 Gb version to be available from Amazon. But this 160 Gb version works just fine, since I mostly view and delete the shows I record. I would pay the extra $20 bucks if I was you and get twice the capacity. I haven't as yet used the Dub from HDD to DVD as yet but I feel sure it will work very well. The problem you will read about with the Dubbing to DVD has been worked out with all new purchases of this devise. So no longer a problem.
The only feature I wish the device had would be a PREVIOUS channel button. This wouldn't be that difficult considering all the other great features this DVR Recorder pocesses and would be in keeping with the TV I now operate it with. And would allow easier channel "surfing".
I researched all the DVRs on the market before I bought this one (i.e. TIVO) and this Magnovox is the best for those that want a reliable Digital Video Recorder for the money, without having to pay a monthly maintenance fee.
I use my DVR in conjunction with a Harmony (676) smart remote. This gives me full control over my entire entertainment center, including the Maganvox H2160, with one remote. And gives me such features as Picture In Picture along with my Magnavox DVR.

MAGNAVOX H2160MW9 160HDD DVR

Item works as advertised and is technically the same item as the original 160GB DRV made by Phillips. Design and Menu is good but the Magnavox DVD drive would not FORMAT blank dvd disks (I tried several makes and types). However, my original Phillips will still format a blank dvd disk and then it will work in the newer Magnavox. (That is not acceptable to me). I have returned the device for replacement because I hope to have a working 160GB DVR device and Magnavox seems to be the last on the market. (Phillips can no longer be found except for exceptionally expensive "refurbished" models.
Magnavox Menus and Features work the same as the Phillips 160GB DVR. Sadly, the DVD recorder built into the Magnavox device would not FORMAT any dvd disk I inserted. Technical calls to Magnavox were unsatisfactory because they indicated I should purchase and use a DVD cleaner (wet type) to clear my problem on this newly purchased (out of the box) Magnavox DVR. After years of using DVD recorders by other manufactures (including Phillips), I have never had a DVD fail to format, but I have been told several times that use of these DVD cleaners (some wet and some abrasively dry) would violate the warranty of a device so I never tried it before I returned the Magnavox.
I hope the replacement works as advertised.

Great standard definition video recorder player

Recorded video is good and clear when using S-video input. Reliably does what it is supposed to do. No issues thus far. Similar to an earlier Philips model. Made by Funai under the Magnavox name. HDMI output works well as advertised. Although not an HD unit, the video looks quite good on an HD television using HDMI.

Great DVD DVR recorder!

I purchased this item to use as a DVR for both over the air digital TV and Satellite TV. Although the manual is very long, once I had used the recorder several times I found it fairly easy to program or record live. The picture quality through the digital tuner, DVD, and HDD is great! The digital tuner pulls in a strong signal and the picture on the HDD looks every bit as good as the received over the air signal. I would highly recommend this product.

Best deal if you don't want leased equipment or tivo

I read mixed reviews of this product before purchasing it. This is a perfect device fot someone that wants a dvr, but doesn't want to deal with tivo or paying extra monthly fees to a cable or sattellite programming provider. My wife uses it to record her soapopera daily, and it can be set to record daily programs at multiple times.
While upon opening the box and pulling out the instruction manual, I was a little worried because of its size, but my worries ended quickly when I realized how easy the product is to use. Anyone who has ever used a dvd recorder or dvr should have no problems avoiding the instruction manual almost completely, and those who have never used either device should only have to refer to the manual for a few items with wich they may not be familiar. The remote is easy to use and on-screen navigation and selection of recording types and preferences are all logical.
Here is a list of what I feel are the main pros and cons:
Pros:
Good price for quality of product, no monthly fees, 1080p upconversion on all media that goes through HDMI cable, digital tuner, multiple settings for recording quality allowing for vast amounts of video to be stored on dvd, easy to use, can record dvd to HDD, able to set timer for multiple daily, weekly or single recordings, connects to many devices including video game consoles.
Cons:
Soud quality is only good - not great and certainly not perfect, no cables included, no interactive tv guide - you have set the timer if you aren't going to be there instead of just selecting the program from a guide, timer recording will not work if the device has a dvd inserted that has material being recorded to it - if you don't finish your recording session even if you are done the timer won't work, no HDMI input - only HDMI output.
Ultimately, this is a good device. It performs very well, with the exception of a slightly diminished sound quality. It does have its limitations. Those with extra money to burn or who must have only the best sound quality shouldn't worry - other companies make exceptional versions of this machine. But this is a quality product for the price.
