A great disk drive for the right price
I had been looking for a replacement
drive
for my
laptop
for a while and was seriously considering the Seagate and Western digital drives when I came upon this one. I was rather impressed with the specs, the price, and the positive reviews (which are really important to me.) After reading through a few of the reviews to look for any signs of defects within the brand I took the plunge and ordered it. It came promptly through the mail and I ended up taking the drive to Best Buy where I already had a service contract for my laptop. Suffice to say allowing them to install the drive was a great idea and after going through the procedure of backing up my original
hard
drive, getting the new drive installed, and then restoring my files I was off and running.
THE PROS:
1.) The speed is amazing. You can really feel the difference from moving from a drive with 5400
RPM
to one with
7200
RPM. The computer seems snapier with each command.
2.) The extra space is SO useful. I now have close an additional 250 GB of hard drive space that I will definitely need as I work on multimedia projects like editing videos.
3.) The heat difference seems to be about the same. Sure, it seems to get a bit hotter on the bottom of the laptop, but I'm not someone who rests the computer on my lap all the time so it works fine for me.
THE NEGATIVES:
1.) It can get a little loud from time to time. At first it sounded extremely loud and it was bit annoying on the ears. But then I thought about how infrequent this noise actually is in comparison with most of the time (I would say 90%) when the laptop is just as quiet as it usually was with my old disk drive. Given that it is only 10% of the time that the laptop can make these noises I am really okay with the grating sound -- there are too many benefits to this drive for me to really care. Additionally, given the fact that it is a 7200 RPM drive and I have been using it for heavy lifting of media filmes I should actually expect that any 7200 RPM drive would do the same thing and make the same sort of noises.
CONCLUSION:
If you want an inexpensive, dependable drive with a ton of memory then you may seriously want to consider this drive. If you can live with the possibility of the drive suddenly getting a little loud then this is the drive for you. I would also pay attention to the fact that the sound issue I mentioned may simply be due to the fact that it is a 7200 RPM drive. But that's just my opinion.

Be forewarned: the actual capacity is 465 GB!
I ordered this
hard
drive
from amazon last week. I chose the free shipping and it arrived in record time: only 4 days to Hawaii! Often things take many weeks to get out here.
I installed the hard drive without a hitch, then I installed the operating system, and I was shocked to see that my computer was saying this brand new, almost empty hard drive only had 465 GB of storage capacity on it. What??? I thought this was a 500 GB drive? Where did the 35 GB go? No way that the file system, OS, partitions, etc, took that much space!
I was worried that I had a defective drive, so I did some googling, and found out that this was actually perfectly normal. Evidently all hard drive manufacturers use a slightly different measurement scale to calculate their drive capacities. Basically, they do this to make their drives seem bigger than they actually are. Kinda lame, right?
So anyway, this shouldn't affect your decision to buy the
Hitachi
or not, since all hard drive manufacturers play this number game. The Western Digital and Seagate 500 GB drives are really only 465 Gbs too.
I'm giving the drive 3 stars for deceptive advertising. Otherwise, I'm sure it's an awesome drive, and it's been working fine for me. Really quiet and really fast. What more could you want? Oh, I know. Another 35 Gbs.

Pleasant Surprise!
These days, one gets used to buying products that don't perform as advertised. That's what makes us "good consumers." Well, this one was a pleasant surprise, as it lives up to all expectations, and then some. It's nearly silent (I have to listen carefully to hear it), my notebook is barely warm to the touch even during lots of intensive Photoshop and Illustrator work using huge files (I use my notebook as a desktop, connected to a 22" display), it's very noticeably faster than the one it replaced (a 5400
RPM
unit) and the 500 GB is fantastic. What more can I say?
Pros: It's a winner.
Cons: None.
