Nice Value.

This is a very basic video camera. The audio quality is top notch. The video is good in bright light but a little dim and grainy in low light. I use it to video my band and it works great !! I would buy again if anything happened to it. Thanks ZOOM...

Works Great for recording Opera Singing Lessions

We tried many ways of recording Opera singing lessons for students. The Zoom Q3 is by far the easiest solution the problem. The video quality is good and it handles the large voices very well. Make sure you update the software from the Zoom site.

Does a simple job well.

I'm very impressed with this device. It's very easy to use and the quality of the sound is really good. The only downside is that you can't connect an external microphone.

Not Enough Leeway To Set Audio Levels

This thing has three gain settings: auto (which pumps during a dynamic music performance), low (which is way too low to capture music in a club at a level that's acceptable for a youtube video), and high, which will clip. The audio recorded in a small club on low gain, is nice and clear, and I didn't think it was too bright (although my test was a jug band with lots of upright bass), but it's so low I had to turn up my iMac's external speakers all the way to hear the spoken parts of the performance.

I would love to see Samson add two more pad settings to this thing. It's still better than my camcorder (which is stereo but distorts at shows). Until then, I'll have to boost the audio in a video editing program, but that kind of makes the thing start to seem like a hassle. Maybe with practice, I'll get better results, but this isn't supposed to be rocket surgery.

I've compared the Zoom head to head with a Flip Ultra HD (which has a stereo mic), and, as between the two, the Zoom's sound is clearly superior. The Flip Ultra HD was leagues better than both my iPhone and my old Aiptek camcorder, but it still clipped slightly and was missing some low end. The video was better on the Flip, though with the Zoom's updated firmware, the low light video was not that much different. This makes the Zoom my go to camera for music venues, absolutely.

I would like to see a firmware upgrade that allows users to manually set levels - or at least a couple more pad settings. I would add at least a star for more recording level flexibility. But, overall, it really is a better choice than the other consumer handheld point and shoot mini camcorders out there.

The software is great. You need a card reader (at least on a Mac) to install it to new SD cards, because the new card has to be in the Zoom for the software to unzip to it from the old card, but it's super helpful in doing quick edits from whole shows.
