Hides my wifes snoring

I like the white noise setting, the others tend to keep me awake. With one button it will turn on for 1/2 an hour so when I wake up to my wifes snoring i can press 1 button and go back to sleep.

One of the Better Sound Machines

I agree with most all of the positive reviews for this item. I listened closely to the sounds when I first got the unit and I found it was nearly impossible to identify any beginning or end in the sound loops. It has a good selection of sounds, with the ocean being my favorite. I have not had an opportunity to try the adaptive settings, so I cannot describe how well this function works. The only detractor I found with this unit is the speaker's audio frequency range. The treble range is poor, which makes the sound seem a little muffled. The lack of crisp, clear sound keeps this unit from being 5 stars.

It Didn't Work For Me

I just wanted to let prospective buyers know that this machine will not work well if you live in an extreme environment, which I do.

I did read all the reveiws before I bought this, because I had another kind of sound machine several years ago that didn't really help me either. The one I had just had the white noise sound, and either low or high. I've also tried the other nature sound ones which just drove me nuts.

So with trepidation, I decided to take my chance on this Ecotones Duet Sound Machine. I thought, or maybe it was more wishing they had improved since the other one I bought about 5 years ago. It was a different brand than this one.

Why I thought maybe this one would work was because it has an adaptive feature, which is supposed to respond to noise.

So, when I took it out of the box, and connected it, I did try all the different sounds. I decided on the white noise one, which is less distracting to me. I also made sure that the adaptive feature was turned on. I also made sure the volume levels were turned on high.

All I got was a headache! I had to turn my tv up. I have excellent hearing, so for me it was just too much noise.

I have to admit tho that my living environment is extreme. I have to keep my doors and windows closed at all times.

There are 2 party houses next to each other, right outside the fence where I live that play their music so loud that sometimes my windows rattle. If it's not playing from their cars it's their friends cars, their houses, their garage, you name it. All I hear is the boom, boom, boom, no words!

Or else it's constant car door slamming, or kids screaming, or the thud of their basketball. The condos where I live it's dogs barking, loud voices, that kind of thing.

I did also try the machine in my bedroom the same night, to see if it would help me sleep better. It didn't.

I e-mailed the company the next day, and explained my living situation, to see if they had any suggestions for me. Someone did e-mail me back the same day. The person told me my living situation is too extreme, that I should return the machine to the store I bought it from, and get my money back, which is what I did.

In all fairness, I think maybe it's not fair to judge this machine based on my living situation, because nothing seems to improve it, especially when you have inconsiderate neighbors who refuse to show consideration to anyone else.

I tried to speak to them neighbor to neighbor, which did no good. Even having the police come out to speak to them seems to be useless.

My year lease is up the end of July, 2010. I've already told my landlady that Iam not renewing it. So much for being told this place was quiet, which it wasn't bad the 2 times I came out, BEFORE I moved in. You really never know what it will be like til you are moved in!

I wish I could say that this sound machine worked well for me. Sadly it didn't. So, I would suggest that if you do live in an extreme environment, and are just wishing to have some peace and quiet like I did, I wouldn't suggest buying this. You will be disappointed!

I guess excellent hearing can be a blessing, and a curse, especially if it affects your living environment!!

Ecotones Duet Sleep Sound Machine

I bought this product to use in an office setting. I see clients for psychotherapy, so it is important to prevent our sessions from accidentally being heard by others outside my office. I enjoy the large variety of different sounds to choose from, although some are not as appropriate for my setting as others. The adaptive feature is a real plus, because it allows the sound to be projected at a low volume (light background noise) when no one is speaking, but when I have a client talking with me the adaptive function raises the volume of sound sufficiently to prevent our conversation from being heard by others. So far this sound machine has done everything I wanted it to do, and some of my clients have said they really enjoy the sounds that I have used (primarily Ocean and Brook). The only drawback I have identified is that the machine responds very abruptly to changes in ambient sound (such as our therapy conversations), and the abrupt ups and downs in volume can be somewhat distracting for some individuals.

The best I've heard so far

I've had a lot of sound machines and this one is the best so far. Lots of features. Real sounding rainfall setting. Timer works as it should. I wish these things were upgradable with different sounds. For the price this one should be.
However I'm very happy with the purchase. It looks expensive and works quite well. Not keen on the "adaptive" feature which listens to the rooms sounds and controls the volume, the machine tends to get very quiet with this setting but
should you cough or breath hard the machine gets very loud suddenly. I keep this feature off. I would recommend this machine.
