Magnetic Ball review

Magnetic balls are a very creative toy. The incredibly strong magnets permit the construction of some large and complex structures. However, the very strong magnetism can make them very frustrating because they always seem to jump over and stick to other magnetic structures (which are often destroyed in the process of removing the maverick balls). The danger for children is swallowing. Swallowing two balls at different times could cause them to stick together thru intestinal walls, etc.; this would probably require surgical removal. (To demonstrate how they can cling to tissue, put a pair on either side of an ear lobe -- it hurts.) One set of 216 balls will not be enough, buy at least 4 sets.

Countless hours of fun. Magnetic strength is very strong. The possibilities of making geometric shapes are endless and goes as far as your imagination. For half the price of the other competitors this is a great buy.

A mixed bag

I own several sets of the competing product, Bucky Balls.

There aren't as good as Bucky Balls, seeming to have about half the strength. The Bucky Balls you can easily form in a giant loop without them breaking, these barely hold in longer strands. I was hoping to use these as a cheap source of replacement balls for my Bucky Ball sets, but not such luck. It's obvious when I substitute them in.

And this is a vendor issue more than the item itself, but when shipped, these came loose in the shipping box with a pamphlet and a little carrying bag.

On the plus side, the box had 224 balls in it, not 216. So at least this set has some extras.

Fun thing for older kids

My kids are 11 and 16 and love these - they each bought a set and they are endlessly amused by them. We take them on trips to have something small to play with, but be warned that some airport security people want to take them out and inspect them (one guard absolutely loved them and was playing with the!) and we keep them away from electronics as they are strong magnets and we don't know if they'd cause damage. But overall, lots of fun.
