It's a fantastic book that tells of a great story, though tragic, along with a history lesson on how the new Miami Beach was created. As I read the book I kept thinking, what is the difference between the politics of Miami Beach then and the current politics of countless cities across the Country and the reason we are in the dire straits we are in today? The only difference between Mayor Daoud and so many other politicians is Mayor Daoud was convicted. How many politicians today are doing exactly what the former Mayor did and getting away with it, many of them openly. The answer is countless. Don't think otherwise. Everyone should read this book, not just for the great content, but as an education on how politics work. I'm looking forward to the movie!
As a new resident to SouthBeach I was anxious to learn more about the history of this city. I picked up The Sins of South Beach for a little background information. What a choice! I was intrigued with the writing and beautiful imagery that Alex Daoud painted in this autobiographical masterpiece. It was well worth fourteen years of writing because the clarity of detail is captivating. The sex, violence, politics and the retainer, make this book a page turner. Alex Daoud holds back no punches. Some of the major players named in the book can also be seen on street signs when you drive through South Beach and downtown Miami. It is apparent that during Alex Daoud's tenure he helped change a slum to one the hottest vacation destinations in the world. I highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.
Sins of SouthBeach is the true story of the rise of South Beach. Alex's Daoud's memoir is a must-read for anybody who lived or lives in South Beach. Sins of South Beach, tells all: from corruption to sex, from drugs to police misconduct. Humorous anecdotes will make you fall in love with the charming man who once was the Mayor--the Robin Hood of South Beach.
Interesting man to read on! He lived the life of the person that Hollywood movies make up in fiction.
Sins of SouthBeach is the true story of sex, drugs, violence, corruption, murder, and the making of Miami Beach. The book is an autobiographical portrait of one of the most spectacular renovations that any city has ever undergone, and the seedy underside that fueled its rise.
Sins of South Beach reveals the city?s renaissance, and the crime and corruption that fueled it. Alex Daoud, who served as Miami Beach?s Commissioner and Mayor from 1979 to 1991, describes in vivid, first-hand details how, as an idealistic young lawyer, he was seduced by money, power, and sex, and how that seduction led to the moral decay that nearly drove him insane.
