Simply the Best!!

Ill make this short and sweet. If your looking for a rain hat then get a Seattle Sombrero, period. Not only are they extremely comfortable, they are also practically indestructible. I purchased my first Seattle Sombrero back in the early 90's and its still in great shape. You can literally crumble these up into a ball and shove them in your pocket. That is because this hat is made out of nothing but Gor-Tex and a soft liner. You can roll it up, crumble it up, bend it any way you want and it will immediately go right back to its original form. Of course all of this would be meaningless if it didn't keep you dry and fortunately these things perform flawlessly in this regard. Whether your out in a downpour or whitewater rafting, if you have a Seattle Sombrero on your head then your head is going to stay dry. Of course these work just as well as a sun hat as they do a rain hat. The rope assures it wont fall of your head when you need it most. I have used them storm chasing in 60 mile per hour winds and so long as the rope is tightened, this hat isn't going anywhere. This is the model that the entire industry tries to mimic and its really what put Outdoor Research on the map in regards to outdoor equipment. Its basically legendary in the outdoor equipment world.

The bottom line - Whether your looking for protection from the rain or the sun, this is the hat you want. There simply is no substitute.

Very fine foul-weather hat

The hat is well made and more substantial than some other high-tech rain hats.

The brim is very wide and provides terrific protection, especially in the back, where it's "got you covered". In colder weather, the fit can be adjusted to provide room for a knitted cap such as my thin Smartwool watchcap - providing both warmth and protection from rain or wet snow.

When it's not raining, the brim can be easily folded up and "stuck" to the sides with the small velcro patches. This produces a long (front to back) but narrow (side to side) wearing profile. I find this works fine for not-raining conditions or walking through tight woods or brush. The hat is also flexible enough to fold up and place in a quart-size ziploc bag for storage or carry.

I've worn mine in hot-and-humid summer conditions, and it breathes so well as to be actually more comfortable than a nylon or polyester baseball cap (my regular summer headwear).

My only quibble is that the brim isn't stiff enough to stay put in a brisk wind. This is not a fault of the hat so much a characteristic of the type of headwear that it is. The easily-cinched strap will keep it on your head, though. When the strap isn't needed, it stows neatly away inside the hat, held in place by the adjustment feature in the back.

It is expensive, but all in all an unusually fine piece of protective headgear. It received the Backpacker magazine's "Editor's Choice" distinction a couple of years ago.

Great hat!!

I wear glasses and this hat performed great in keeping them dry, along with my head, during a downpour on a 40 mile hike at the AT in Georgia. It's Comfy and fits great.

The Seattle Sombrero is the ultimate rain hat. Tested in some of the heartiest downpours the world has to offer, the "Sea Somb" is a rainy day classic. The shell offers waterproof protection and the brushed lining manages perspiration. The shaped brim directs water away from your head when it's gushing. Use it in the worst rain storm you can find and keep your head dry while kayaking, hiking, skiing in the Pacific Northwest, sailing, or getting off the bus into a thunder shower.
