Transitional Hank III.....the best is yet to come!
Don't let the negative reviews of this album fool you. Is this Hank III's best album? No, of course not, even III has said that, himself. He said that he'd be lucky if he ever topped "Straight to Hell", which is regarded by almost all of his fans to be his best album to date. The important thing to remember here is that this is his last album for Curb Records. In fact, at the end of this summer (I think) is when his contract with them ends. I think that he is saving his best material for when his Curb contract expires. THEN, I think you will see what he's really capable of. Having said that, though, I really don't think this album is all that bad. It's probably my least favorite, but it's still 100 times better than the crap they play on "country" radio, these days. One thing I noticed, being a musician, is that all of the songs seem to be tuned down a half-step. Whether this is to better fit his voice or just an experiment, I'm not sure, but it gives the album a darker, more somber tone, overall. The songs aren't bad, but they're not his best, either. It's hard to write, though, when your creativity is being stifled by a major record label. Just wait until he can be free and team up with someone like Wayne Hancock, Dale Watson, or even Those Poor Bastards. Even though he hasn't topped "Straight to Hell" yet, don't give up on Hank III....I have a feeling that the best is yet to come!

The difference between Adult and Grown Up
Hank III albums tend to be the musical equivalent of Chinese food. It feels good to cheer along when he bashes the mainstream, but there is little that really sticks with you. His new album is something much deeper and much better. He has always been good at adult content, but this is the first album that seems to have been written for grown-ups. While Hank still references drinking and drug use, he has pulled them into the deeper context of a life lived around them. He has settled into an OCMS styled bluegrass groove that adds a note of authenticity to songs that sound like mountain ballads. On Karmageddon he manages to pull influences ranging from Jimmy Martin to Metallica to the Beatles circa Revolution No. 9. All told, a beautiful album that pulls from the best traditions of Outlaw country.

More Of The Same
OK, let's list the pros and cons of Hank III and his new album,
REBEL
WITHIN
:
Pros:
Great voice just like Grandaddy's
Great songs with strong hooks
High energy
Great musicianship
Cons:
Repetitive themes(drugs, alcohol, Hank III's rebel status.
Profanity
Inexplicable and inappropriate profane screaming throughout the record
Don't get me wrong; I know that drugs, alcohol and rebelliousness are tried and true themes in country music(especially Outlaw Country). But Hank III just takes it way too far. It seems that not a single song here doesn't mention gettin' drunk, gettin' tore up, taking drugs, and so forth. And as much as I support every artist's right to free speech, I also can reach a point where I'm just tired of hearing him scream the F-bomb countless times. With this album, and especially the song "Tore Up And Loud," I have reached that point.
Much like his Daddy did in the late 80s, Hank III has become a cartoonish parody of himself, having to be more outrageously "rebellious" on each subsequent record to maintain his "outlaw" image.
