Bruckner: Symphony No 841 reviews
Anton Bruckner, Herbert von Karajan, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1989

A Benchmark Bruckner 8
No single conductor can uncover all the secrets of such an inexhaustible masterpiece as Bruckner's Eighth. Nevertheless, Karajan came closer to giving us a "definitive" account than any of his contemporaries. Perhaps the success of his VPO version from the early digital era can be explained by noting that Karajan is one of only two conductors who was privileged to make three commercial ...

Brain Drill

Metal Blade, 2008

You are not prepared
I'd been hearing a lot of hype around Brain Drill, specifically the drummer's speed, for a little while before I actually got the album. I sampled their Parasites EP and thought it was decent, but more of a chaotic mess than anything else. Something told me to get this one, and boy howdy. After about 11 seconds of a drill sound (very clever), the opening track simply explodes. I'm not going to ...

Bruckner: Symphony No. 811 reviews
Anton Bruckner, Gunter Wand, ...

RCA, 2001

Awe-inspriring live performance!
Interestingly, timing of each movement of this awe-inspiring recording by Wand is almost idential to Karajan's 1957 EMI stereo recording, another powerful recording of the 8th played by BPO. But from the very bold opening Wand's determination to dig even deeper into soul of the music and to soar even higher to the transcendent is obvious. The only weakness in this performance may be the less ...

Bruckner: The Complete Symphonies30 reviews
Anton Bruckner, Eugen Jochum, ...

EMI Classics, 2000

This Bruckner cycle sparkles and shines with spiritual profundity!
I bought both Jochum cycles (DG and EMI) of the Bruckner Symphonies well over a year ago and listened to them both over and over for several months. I finally reached what I thought was the saturation point and, being afraid I had over-done it, put them away for awhile. I recently decided to listen to them both straight through again, starting with the earlier DG set; finished that one and moved ...

Zamfir: The Lonely Shepherd14 reviews
James Last, Anonymous, ...

Philips, 1990

The most soothing sounds
I grew up listening to Zamfir's pan flute soothing music, then for the past 15 years, I've been away from it until I heard The Lonely Shepherd while watching Kill Bill. I was pleasantly surprised to find the CD at Amazon and bought it at once. Many of the other songs on this CD are good as well, but nothing beats The Lonely Shepherd.

Bruckner: Symphonie No 812 reviews
Anton Bruckner, Carlo Maria Giulini, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1995

A GREAT TESTAMENT BY A GREAT CONDUCTOR
I REMEMBER A COLD WINTERY NIGHT BACK IN 1975 WHEN MY WIFE AND I BRAVED THE LATEST CHICAGO SNOWSTORM TO DRIVE TO ORCHESTRA HALL. IT WOULD BE WORTH IT, I THOUGHT. GIULINI WAS CONDUCTING--THE BRUCKNER 8TH. AFTER A HARRIED BUT SAFE ARRIVAL, WE DISCOVERED THAT THE PROGRAM HAD BEEN CHANGED. APPARENTLY, THE MAESTRO'S COPY OF THE SCORE WAS MISPLACED, SO HE WOULD SUBSTITUE ANOTHER WORK. A NOTE OF ...

Return to the Apocalyptic City7 reviews
Testament

Atlantic UK, 1993

Killer Live EP
Testament is one of the best thrash bands that has ever existed and this is one of those releases that proves it. This is accually the first Testament release I ever brought. I brought this back in 1994 as part of a cassett clearance at an old Camelot Music store. I was never dissapointed. This is actually a live EP of 6 songs. Every song here is played live except Return To Serenity which is a ...

Bruckner: Symphonies Nos. 3-5, 7-9 [Box Set]5 reviews
Anton Bruckner, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2004

Celibidache's most 'normal' Bruckner is full of inspiration
If you are used to thinking of Celibidache as an enigmatic, glacially slow conductor, this box of Bruckner performances from DG will be an eye-opener. It dates from the Seventies, before the maestro's more eccentric inclinations set in completely--his tempos are anywhere from 2 to almost 10 min. faster in various movements. (In some places, such as the finael of Sym. #7, the tempo may actually be ...

Apocalyptica

Universal Int'l, 2008

Apocalyptica
This is a beautiful album. My son has been listening to it for a long time on line. I listened to it and also fell in love with it, especially "Farewell". Unfortunately, my granddaughter got a hold of the cd the next day and ruined it. I have been working on it and got some of it to play, but some songs still skip and freeze. I'm going to keep working on it to see if I can get the rest of the ...

Symphonies 1-914 reviews
Bruckner, Jochum

Deutsche Grammophon, 2003

Used this is One Great Bargain!
Bruckner is amongst my favorite composers of the 19th century's second half. That is, he is a favorite when he is properly presented. I've heard Jochum several times in person playing these works and own most if not all his other versions on CD as well. This set is better played than the EMI/Dresden version, although that one has more "guts" because the orchestra is going all out at every ...

Hellhammer Review
Apocalyptic Raids is pretty sick. Its basically just Celtic Frost and its just a good as anything they recorded under that moniker.

Symphony 83 reviews
Bruckner, Solti, ...

Polygram Records, 1992

Proud testament to long Solti/CSO collaboration
Many people fault Solti for superficiality in his Bruckner and this is certainly true in some of his earlier recordings (such as the 4th with the CSO). This criticism is, however, completely out of place for this disc. Recorded on tour in St.Petersburg Russia, this disc captures the best of Solti and the CSO without some of the sonic inadequacies of earlier London/Decca recordings in the CSO's ...

Bruckner: Symphony No. 83 reviews
Anton Bruckner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, ...

Elektra / Wea, 2001

A recording to compete with the best
Until now this is Nikolaus Harnoncourt's best recording on his series of Bruckner's symphonies. Although he uses the Nowak edition, the way he conducts this masterpiece is astonishing : sensibility, clarity, detail and a true sense of ensemble are present every moment. The Berliners play wonderfully throughout ( the brass is outstanding).Even If you have the classic readings of Giulini, ...

Symphonies (Complete) (Comp)11 reviews
Bruckner, Cso, ...

Decca Import, 1996

It's that superb brass
'Bruckner is brass' or at least the brass is much more involved. To hear a good Bruckner the brassplayers of the orchestra needs to be outstanding. Unfortunately many brass sections of top orchestras do not have quality brass. That's different with the Chicago SO under Solti where all brass player were superb (and maybe they still have such brassplayers) The top European orchestras do not have ...

Apocalyptic Raids7 reviews

THE death metal album
Hellhammer is the ultimate deathmetal band. Their sound is equalled only by such bands as cannibal corpse and morbid angel, each premiere death metal bands in their own right. Here's a story for ya. A critic talked smack on this album, so the lead singer went to his house and killed him and his whole family with a medieval battle axe, and then he went home and took his own life. He left a ...

Bruckner: Symphony 826 reviews
Anton Bruckner, Pierre Boulez, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2000

Still One of the Best
This has long been my favorite recording of the 8th. There is just something very special about Boulez's approach. The details are as clear as one could want, while still allowing one to bask in the sheer beauty and glow of the resonant cathedral acoustics. Boulez has a tremendous gift for highlighting the structure of the symphony, obviously drawing parallels to the organ-like terracing that ...

Apocalyptic Visions1 review
Ecthirion

Super Metal!
Soundmass is pleased to be releasing the debut 5 track EP, "Apocalyptic Visions", for Ecthirion on May 22, 2009. With guest vocals by Eugen Dodenhoeft (Far Beyond) and Azahel Frost (Frost Like Ashes) and operatic vocals by Josh Edwards, expect epic orchestral metal with Viking and black metal tendencies. A new band hailing from the United Kingdom, Ecthirion's aim is to write broad and unique ...

Bruckner: Symphony No. 83 reviews
Anton Bruckner, Franz Welser-Most, ...

EMI Classics, 2002

Bowled over by Bruckner
I love to hear Bruckner live in the concert hall but very reluctantly on cd as the performances have tended to have their longeurs. Not so with this recording. It is exceptionally vivid and thrilling and has all the virtues of a "live" performance but such is the quality of the recording that one might be forgiven for thinking it was the result of inspired studio takes. Bruckner is revealed in ...

Bruckner: Symphonies No. 3 & No. 83 reviews
Anton Bruckner, George Szell, ...

Sony Classical, 1994

very interesting and reasonably priced too
These performances of the Bruckner 3rd and 8th were originally recorded in 1966 and 1969, respectively, at a time when George Szell's relationship with the Cleveland Orchestra was near its peak. As per my recollection of the detailed documentation accompanying this recording, the conductor chose the 1889 Nowak edition of the 3rd and made some personal modifications to the Nowak edition of the ...
