Brother Sun, Sister Moon10 reviews
Gregorian Chant, William Byrd, ...

American Gramaphone, 1990

Light and shadows
Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is ...

Faure: Requiem and other choral music10 reviews

Collegium, 2000

It's Beauty Revealed, At Last
This Collegium COLCD 109 is a later release of the Collegium COLCD 101 which I purchased circa 1985 after reading glowing reviews in Grammophone magazine. COLCD 101 is labeled Stereo/Digital. COLCD 109 is labeled Stereo/DDD. Is it a re-mastering? Liner notes don't say, but the new version provides noticeable improvements in vividness and clarity. The release of COLCD 101 was a watershed ...

Feel the Spirit3 reviews
John Rutter, Cambridge Singers, ...

Collegium, 2001

A must have for John Rutter fans
The Cambridge Singer's have an outstanding reputation for their choral music under the direction of John Rutter. This recording lives up to Collegium's standard of high quality recordings. Rutter's "Heavenly Aeroplane" is a kick! My 11 month old kid dances to it. "Who is Sylvia" is hauntingly beautiful.

Sing Ye Heavens - Hymns for All Time12 reviews
Cambridge Singers, John Rutter

Collegium, 2000

Another Rutter Keeper!
Rutter has won many fans throughout the world for his passionate, creative yet tasteful contributions to church music. Here is a hymn collection with several traditional choices along with Rutter originals. Several comprise Rutter's remakes, which is most cases are very diginified and not at all distractive to the thrust of the original. The orchestration is superb, and the Cambridge Singers of ...

The John Rutter Christmas Album25 reviews
Franz Xaver Gruber, Stephen Varcoe, ...

Collegium, 2002

Good for Chorus Members!
This is an excellent Christmas album! John Rutter is truely a wonderful contemporary composer. As a member of a symphony chorus that sang several Rutter numbers this year, the album was a big help in learning some of his lesser known carols. Thanks!

Requiem & Magnificat/Rutter, Cambridge Singers32 reviews
John Rutter, Cambridge Singers, ...

Collegium, 2000

Why I Like Tthis CD
This is an excellent CD. I had an ulterior motive for ordering it, however. I sing in a local Choral Society and we are performing it this coming weekend. I wanted the CD to follow along at home and get my part down a little better. I do very much enjoy John Rutter's music and the Cambridge Singers are very good.

Cambridge Singers - Lighten our Darkness (2 CD)4 reviews
Louis Bourgeois, William Byrd, ...

Collegium, 2006

Marvelous
This is superb a capella singing. Each note, each syllable, is just right. John Rutter has a genius for writing and, as is the case here, performing religious choral music. The sound is gorgeous. Highest recommendation.

John Rutter: The Sacred Flame; Europea2 reviews
John Rutter, Nuova Musica, ...

Collegium, 2009

Argyablt the absolute best collection of its kind that I have ever heard!
John Rutter has always dominated the choral music field, mostly performances and recordings of his own compositions. Who knew that a colelction of early church music would be so captivating. The Cambrisge Singers are in fine voice as they navigate the performance practices of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. The new group that specializes in Early Music La Nuova Musica give ...

Ave Verum Corpus: Motets & Anthems2 reviews
Byrd, Cambridge Singers, ...

Collegium, 2003

Hail, true music...
--William Byrd-- William Byrd was a composer of grace and power. A staunch Catholic in an increasingly Protestant country, Byrd maintained his church loyalties at high cost. However, as a recognised genius at liturgical music, he had powerful admirers and friends, perhaps including Queen Elizabeth herself. Producing musical settings to Latin texts in a new-regime English-dominated church ...

Images of Christ4 reviews
Sir Edward Cuthbert Bairstow, John Rutter, ...

Collegium, 2000

A fantastic recording
This collection of music from the last thousand years is masterful from start to finish. From well-known mainstays of choral repertoire such as Lotti's "Crucifixus" and Casals' "O Vos Omnes" to the more seldom heard pieces, such as Rachmaninov's setting of the Beatitudes, the listener is treated to musically sympathetic and disciplined performances. Even if, like me, you're not of a religious ...

Stillness And Sweet Harmony3 reviews
Charles Pott, Gregorian Chant, ...

Collegium, 1996

Bad day at work? Enter another realm
This is a wonderfully mellow selection of choral works in the English tradition, and a particularly well-balanced program: You can set the CD to play and relax with a good glass of wine. The Cambridge Singers come across as a single, smooth instrument--not a group of belting soloists. Rutter's arrangements and orchestrations avoid here some of the cutesy movie-style effects on some of the ...

Christmas Night: Carols of the Nativity21 reviews
Boris Ord, Herbert Howells, ...

Collegium, 1993

The Best of the best
I,ve been collecting Christmas Music for over 25 Years especially the non-pop genre. This is my desert CD. The Chanticleer and Kings College CDs are very good but this is the summit of quiet meditative music for the season. I always listen to this alone at night and still get thrilled and overwhelmed by it's beauty and sublimity. My favorite track is "In the Bleak Mid-Winter" simply because of ...

Sacred Music: Gloria1 review
Poulenc, Cambridge Singers, ...

Collegium, 2003

Rutter's Poulenc CD is great
This is a spirited performance of beautiful music. It is typically an "English" choral sound -- lots of head tones, crystal-clear diction, performance clarity. BUT if you want the "definitive" Poulenc Gloria, this is not it. Actually, I have the first recording made of the Gloria -- an Angel mono LP "made with supervision of the composer" (whatever that means) in 1961. It's a grand, ...

Cambridge Singers a Capella1 review
Cambridge Singers, Rutter

Collegium, 2003

International a cappella
It may seem somewhat strange for the Cambridge Singers to entitle a piece 'A Capella', given that almost all of their music performance is a capella. However, in this collection, they are performing a repertoire from composers whose usual fare is not a capella composition. This was performed in one of their regular recording haunts, the Great Hall of University College School, London, in 1992. ...

John Rutter: Te Deum and Other Church Music10 reviews
John Rutter, London Sinfonia, ...

Collegium, 1993

Beautiful, excellent album
I have wanted this album for several years and have finally found it and purchased it. I have listened to it dozens of times since I received it, and love it! I hesitated to buy it because it is more expensive than most music CD's, but it is worth it.

Messiah: The Complete Work9 reviews
George Frideric Handel, John Rutter, ...

Hendrickson Worship/Martingale Music, 2007

The best recorded performance of Messiah I've heard
This is the newest recording of Messiah and it is wonderful. John Rutter and his band of musicians have captured the essence of this oratorio. Tempi are appropriate and not exessively fast. The balance between choir and orchestra is excellant and the soloists fit the piece. Technically, the recording is several levels above the ususal. I have posessed a number of recordings of Messiah over ...
