All-Time Christmas Best!
This is easily my all-time favorite Christmas collection. There are other excellent choir albums, of course, but the Robert Shaw Chorale is the finest in every way, and inclusion of the (rarely performed) Boar's Head song puts this one at the top. EVERYONE who likes traditional Christmas music should own this album.

It will lift up your Spirit
I was stunned to find this Album still existed and had been re-mastered and transferred to CD, and that so few reviews had been written about it. I first heard this magnificent product - on vinyl - at the time of it's original release in 1961 ( there seems to be some confusion among Web-sites about when it was first produced, but I remember it being 1961). That particular year had been a ...

Uncle Abe rattles the house with this thing
I came home from work one day when my uncle was visiting my wife and myself. He was recently retired from the ministry. He had heard a lot of choral music in his life. My aunt said he had the stereo ( power end of my stereo at the time was an Adcomm 555 amp. conservatively rated at 200 watts RMS per channel) up so loud it was rattling the whole house. I too have come to love this music. I ...

Inspiring Christmas music
This is some of the most beautiful Christmas music I own. It is all sung a cappella, proving that the human voice is as good as any instrument in conveying the message and spirit of the carols. I purchased it because I liked the Robert Shaw Chorale's Christmas albums, but to me this later group of singers sounds just as inspiring. This CD has the advantage of more modern recording techniques ...

A memorable album by Robert Shaw
I sometimes wonder why any top choral conductor would want to conduct, least of all record, a piece where the soloists invariably command center stage at the expense of the chorus. Robert Shaw (1916 - 1999), of course, is practically a god in the choral world. And while he has done well as an orchestral conductor, his claim to fame to most will always be his work with choruses. So here we ...

The quintessential Christmas recording
This recording seems to elicit universal and heartfelt praise. Who am I to dispute that? The performance is terrific, just as described by the other Amazon reviewers, no doubt about it. However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!

the best female singer of the great american standards.
i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand, patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in "broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely "on the street where ...

A hidden diamond
This unassuming budget classic reissue is among the finest of its genre: The Wagner orchestral highlight album, and features the contents of 1973 LP recital the farthest thing from run-of-the-mill, spaciously recorded with the palpable feeling of the presence of the musicians, not merely an amorphously gorgeous orchestral sonority. The music unfolds without self-indulgent pointing, in a ...

Robert Shaw "Gloria" and "Magnificat" are both magnificant
Recently, I purchased the Vivaldi "Gloria" and the Bach "Magnificat" performed by Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Chorus. It is wonderful -- as are all Shaws recordings. It has that driving rhythmic vitality which all of his work does. This is especially effective in these two exciting pieces. I have never heard a better rendtion of either of these works and I have heard many. All of the ...

Not Russian, but Shaw....
Shaw was uniquely American, born and raised in Southern California, a director of the San Diego Symphony before taking the helm in Atlanta, and at one time had thought of going into the Ministry. His interpretations (with rare exceptions) of any music of a "sacred" nature are deep in emotion and spirituality, and reflect an American attitude of letting the music speak for itself. I read with ...

Best of American Choral Singing!
This CD could be the cornerstone of your choral music library! Wonderful performances of all of the essential choral pieces give a wonderful introduction to choral music for someone new to it, and also give a nice sampler of the best pieces for someone already familiar with the music. Listening to each excerpt may inspire you to purchase the entire work! As you would expect of performances by ...

Lush and very moving
I am a big fan of the numerous Karajan recordings, and I found many similarities in this reading. This performance has a rich, thick romantic feel that can really overwhelm you. Shaw's tempos are a little brisker, though, but overall the lush atmosphere is pure Karajan. Arleen Auger has a gorgeous voice, but I felt she was holding back. Richard Stilwell, on the other hand, really let loose ...

You'll be Happy
There is an earlier 1963 recording of the same material. This newer recording is by far superior. The 1963 recording has been remastered for "improved" sound and in the transformation the quiet parts got loud and the loud parts got shrill and distorted.

Best recording of this oratorio
This oratorio is excellent. From a musical viewpoint, the orchestration, vocal work, and overall technics of this work are superbly done. In the spiritual sense, this oratorio manages to get the real feel of the Creation. You can see God's awesome works being performed before your eyes. When the final chorus is sung you leave with a greater sense of God and power. One piece that is very well ...

Fresh and Original Arrangements
As you might expect, this is quite a grand Christmas recording, featuring the choir, orchestra, and mighty organ of the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City under their new conductor, Craig Jessop, who studied under the late Robert Shaw. What is especially welcome about this recording is that although it consists of the standard traditional Christmas carols, the arrangements are fresh and ...

A GREAT VERSION TO LISTEN TO
SHAW'S ASO & CHORUS DO A WONDERFUL JOB WITH THIS MESSIAH. IT IS ALSO LIGHT & AIRY WITH GOOD SOLID SOLOISTS. IT IS NOT FLAT, IT IS MOVING. NOTE THAT CONDUCTOR SHAW SETS HIS MUSIC TO A FASTER PACE AS COMPARED TO OTHER CONDUCTORS. SO HIS HALLELUJAH CHORUSES ARE RAPID. HOWEVER, IF YOU COMPARE IT TO MESSIAHS OF THE 1960S/70S ALL YOU WILL HEAR ARE SLOW ORCHESTRAS & VERY FLAT VOICES. YOU CANNOT HAVE A ...

What do you do with a drunken sailor?
Those mellow voices of the men's chorus from Robert Shaw set a salty gait for a listener keen to the rhythms of life at sea and ashore. Voices are well balanced. This disk is a hearty addition to prize in one's music library. It is not to be missed.
