Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary Edition

Judy Garland
Capitol, 2001
If I could take one CD to a desert island...
I've been listening to this album/CD since I was 14. I'm 53 (tomorrow). For me, this is the best recording by anybody, ever recorded, anywhere. Beatles? Sinatra? Elvis? I'm a fan of them all, but no one but Judy Garland on this CD actually causes me to have a PHYSICAL reaction - every single time I listen to it. The hair on the back of the neck stands up, I get goosebumps, and 9/10 times I ...
The Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall

Dave Brubeck
Sony, 2001
Arguably the best Brubeck Qt recording.
This is the Brubeck Quartet album I listen to most often. Abounds with good solos from Brubeck and Desmond. Years ago I thought some Brubeck harmonies here to be too harsh; but now I find those harmonies beautiful - harshly beautiful, - and thrilling. I particularly like the Brubeck solo at the end of St. Louis Blues; the Muse pushed him to take chances, and his solo's dronelike quality seems ...

Put Bill Withers in the Hall Of Fame
This is an absolute powerhouse show, out of print for way too long. Bill Withers (and about a dozen or more others I can name - ranging from the Monkees to BTO to Arthur Alexander to Badfinger to The Raiders to Pat Benatar) should be inducted. NOT disco and rap types who have nothing at all to do with rock or it's predecessors. Madumma belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall about as much as John Wilkes ...

Buena Vista Social Club

Ultimate in Latin music
The Buena Vista Social Club creates a musical experience that transcends time and place. They are icons of Latin music. If you are already a fan, this is a must have cd set for the event's historical value. For new listeners, BVSC is not for those seeking the pulsing beats of modern salsa. The rhythms and vocals of this cd are slower paced, smooth and sensual. The music still captures and ...

requiem for the Clancys
The last of the Clancys Llam passed away about a month ago and this live concert from St Patricks Day 1963 by the very influential celtic folk group is a fitting memorial to the brothers and their time on earth.

Great Jazz!
This is a great collection. The sound quality is better than I expected, considering it was recorded live in the 50's (using 50's equipment). Guess that says something for the acoustics at Carnegie Hall. Monk, Coltrane and the rest of the quartet are excellent. Let's hear it for the Library of Congress folks who found this tape buried away and resurrected it!

Stevie Ray Vaughan

LIVE ! FROM NEW YORK, IT'S STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & DOUBLE TROUBLE !
Live At Carnegie Hall was recorded on October 4, 1984 (one day after Stevie's thirtieth birthday). There are also guest appearances by John Hammond, Jimmie Vaughan, Dr. John, vocalist Angela Strehli (who sings an enthusiastic lead vocal on C.O.D.) and the Roomful Of Blues horn section. The performance is an intimate blues celebration. At the end of the night, Stevie says, "Thank you very much ...

Belafonte at Carnegie Hall
This is music as only Belafonte can do it. The tunes stay with you and overall it is an enjoyable experience to listen to this CD. His version of "Matilda" is a hoot.

great stuff
Great stuff. Goodman and the rest at their best. A live performance is always better than a studio recording. This was in Carnegie Hall where the acoustics are second to none. Remember it was recorded in 1939...the state of the art was pretty primitive...and this is wonderful. I'd recommend this album to anyone.

2 Concerts For The Price Of One...But Not Complete
The CD is somewhat misstated to gain notoriety but who cares with great music..The 1st 5 tracks are the reunion of Diz n Bird at Carnegie Hall (1947)and the remainder the big band set..The liner notes clearly mentions that Ella Fitzgerald was singing on 6 selections omitted here as well as other selections either unrecorded properly or intentionally omitted.

Have been looking for the Children's Medly forever!
I was so excited to find this CD including the Children's Medly. I wanted my children to learn the songs that I learned when I was young and that you don't hear anyone sing anymore. I hope the traditional music of the Clancy's and Tommy Makem lives on long beyond their time.

Chicago
Rhino / Wea, 2005
One of the Best Live Albums Ever.
Most people these days think of Chicago as a mellow pop band with no real soul. The fact is that in their early days Chicago was a revolutionary band both musically and politically. This huge set of music chronicles their week-long stint at Carnegie Hall in 1971. This is the way a live album should be. It's raw and full of energy. The late Terry Kath shines, as does Peter Cetera, Bobby Lamm, ...

Rufus Wainwright

Judy would've loved this....
I first heard Rufus on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Absolutely loved the song (that voice) but didn't know who sang it and didn't follow up on it at the time (for some reason!). Then recently I was doing a search on YouTube for Grey Gardens and came across Rufus singing his song of the same title, awesome. Listened to a few other songs, Hallelujha, Over the Rainbow, and thought I must get one of ...

Great performances: One reservation
I agree with the very informative comments and opinions in the other review of this release. My copy, also poorly packaged, was without any background information about Horowitz or these or other potential performances in this series. There were no performance dates for either work - only a one-liner about private tapes recorded between 1945-51. Shame on BMG Sony marketing staffs for this ...

Hysterical
It's just as good as the day I watched this on DVD at a friend's house. By the end of it, we were all in tears with smiles etched onto our faces. the album holds up to that, with Black dragging out some of his greatest material he's ever composed into a huge, monumentally hilarious performance. For newcomers of his brand of comedy, the Carnegie Hall album works well. And mark my words, you'll ...

The Master at work
Having only previously owned a VHS copy of this concert(a fast deteriorating one at that) what a pleasure it was to see it again on DVD in all it's digital splendor. The brilliance of the late Madeline Kahn in 'Getting Married'; the understated ...

Another great work
There will never be another Aznavour, Sinatra, or their likes. Aznavour is a master at what he does, and his voice will be ever lasting. A great DVD to watch, not only to hear Aznavour but to see him on stage and be entertained by his acting as well. One of the best singers whose name will not be forgotten in French music history.
