Exquisite, with glimpses of a transcendental beauty
I can't believe it. This is the first "Christmas" disc I ever bought and am still regularly listening to ... nine months post-holiday, now! This collection is replete with sparks of worship and awe. The festive jaunt embarks on a well-executed, majestic baroque piece, slipping into some flitty operatics. The mood shifts from aristocratic regalism to rich, emotive ethnicity in the climactic, ...
Britten Choral Works II: A Ceremony of Carols

Coro, 2009
This recording celebrates some of Britten's finest choral music for Christmas, together with his Missa Brevis. It is headed by the much-loved A Ceremony of Carols, a masterpeice composed on board ship as Britten returned to England from the U.S.A. in 1942. The telling use of the harp as accompaniment helps to suggest a touching evocation of boyhood lost but never forgotten.

This is the BEST Christmas collection that I have ever heard. I would like to purchase 15 more to give as gifts this year; however, it appears that Decca is out of stock or no longer releasing it. HELP!!

THE BEST Muscial score ever written, hands down......
I have been listening to this CD for over a decade and it is still relevant, still in my CD player at all times, and a muscial and score that will live on as my all-time favorite for decades to come. I was blessed and fortunate to see Josh Groban, Raul Esparza and Adam Pascal perform in Chess for a one-night engagement for the Actor's Fund of America Concert in 2003 and I literally cried my ...

Inspiring Christmas music
This is some of the most beautiful Christmas music I own. It is all sung a cappella, proving that the human voice is as good as any instrument in conveying the message and spirit of the carols. I purchased it because I liked the Robert Shaw Chorale's Christmas albums, but to me this later group of singers sounds just as inspiring. This CD has the advantage of more modern recording techniques ...

PERFECT!
What a great CD! Completely takes the work out of putting together your own ceremony CD. We aren't having live musicians play so this suits our needs perfectly! The CD booklet tells you when each song would be appropriate (precessional, recessional, interludes, etc.)and everything! The music is your classic wedding music, nothing funky. I believe ALL the songs are instrumentals.

Beautiful Harmonies and Vocalizations
Like another reviewer, I am thrilled at Lo! He Comes, as well as with the unfamiliar setting for Hark the Herald Angels Sing and the beautiful Sing We the Virgin Mary. If you love beautiful vocalizations, especially rare soprano-alto harmonizations, this is the album for you.

Boy trebles show brilliant style, unusual timbre
There is a kind of effortlessness to the singing of the English cathedral choirboy (at the highest levels of selection and training) which tends to produce a wistful, often plaintive sound. It is a timbre that is artless in the finest sense, and most perfect for the Anglo-Catholic liturgical repertoire. I think that even in today's climate of social uniformity one cannot sensibly deny that there ...

Wonderful CD
I purchased this CD for my 78 yr old mother, a widow, who is getting remarried this Sept. and needed some recorded music to play before the ceremony and for the processional and recessional. She absolutely loves the CD and plays it over and over and over! It is a beautiful CD and I would highly recommend it for anyone needing this type of music.

great reissue! (about the LP reissue on Sundazed)
Really nice reissue on Sundazed: quiet, flat, thick vinyl (about 160 gram). Sound has a little more 'low' than my old version from the 70-ies. The songs are great, this is my favourite Cohen album: play it loud!

The Cult
Beggars UK - Ada, 2000
best cult ever
This is their 5th album and unlike all of its predecessors it did not bring anything new to the table sound wise comparing to the previous release (Sonic temple). That seems to be the main problem with most of the reviewers here. I too have to agree with that, however in my opinion Ceremony is way better in every possible way. Here's why: production is better to my ears, I love ALL the songs, ...

Excellent Mens Corale (about 100 men) sing inspiring Christmas Music !!!
This is probably the best men's chorus (approximately 100 singers from across America) I have ever heard recorded. The album jacket indicates each of the participants are professionals. The songs are extremely well orchestrated and a wide variety of Christian Christmas music is provided. The track "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem is breathtaking. I heard this track about 3 years ago and kept ...

BEST OF BRITISH
This disc can be recommended enthusiastically to all admirers of Britten's work and also to newcomers. His genius and originality often show up most clearly when he writes for small forces. There are 33 items in total here, twelve in the Ceremony of Carols itself and twelve more songs in the collection entitled `Friday afternoons' because that was when they were first rehearsed by his brother's ...

A Recommended Nontraditional Set of Carols
Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols" has been a part of the standard repertoire of the American Boychoir since at least the middle 1950's when the group was named the Columbus Boychoir. Middle English poems form the basis of the collection with only a couple of exceptions, notably the latin "Hodie" and the modern English "This Little Babe." Britten exploits the simplicity of the poetry with music ...

"One Comes Into The World, Another Leaves" ~ Penetrating The Mysticism Of The Kabala
Note: Yiddish with English subtitles. `The Dybbuk', released in '37 is a cinematic time capsule providing the viewer with a mesmerizing glimpse into a world that no longer exists. While '37 was a long time ago (70 years come 01/07) the film has a feel, no an atmosphere, that seems much older. Filled with magic, superstition and Jewish mysticism, it is a veritable compendium of Yiddish culture, ...

Harry Christophers, The Sixteen: Hodie: Virtuoso Choral Singing of Stunning Effect: If you would foil your foes with joy?...
On this disc of holiday music we get a mix of modern Christmas carols, plus the nearly indispensable Benjamin Britten Ceremony of Carols. Besides Britten, composers include William Walton, Herbert Howells, Peter Warlock, Peter Racine Fricker, Edmund Rubbra, John Tavener, Peter Hayward, John Gardner, and Kenneth Leighton. The chorus sings a capella for the most part, though discrete ...

The real gem here is the Oratorio
I think this album is worth buying for the Oratorio alone. Saint-Saens' Oratorio is way too underrated and underperformed, and I hadn't heard of it myself until my fine arts program put on a production of it this semester. It's a small scale work written only for strings, harp and organ (and chorus and soloists of course), nevertheless it is absolutely gorgeous. Even the recitative is beautiful! ...

Reverse prejudice? Becuz students are white?????
Peeps hav written negative reviews becuz all the students are white females - talk about closed minded. So, if all the students had been native american, then the teachings would of been valid?! Get real. Not one negative reviewer dissed the material, just the man. The info was on which herbs healed what ailment- how is that a fraud? Or on how to build something, how is that a fraud? Enchanted by Enchanted Christmas
This album contains some of the most beautiful harp music combined with Stevan Pasero's New Chamber Ensemble that I have ever heard. Ms. Mendieta's mastery of the harp is in this reviewer's thinking probably the best I have ever heard, and I believe harp truly is an angelic instrument. But it's not just her harp playing that makes it so good, it is also the arrangements made possible through ...
