Schoenberg: Piano Works6 reviews
Arnold Schoenberg, Robert Craft, ...

Sony, 1995

Mr. Gould: the Genius of Recorded Music!
Gould was playing Schoenberg in the 1950s--just shortly after the composer's death. He realizes the Op. 11 pieces in a very late-Brahmsian manner, in keeping with his gestalt of turn-of-the-century Modern music, viz., Brahms, Strauss, Scriabin, Schoenberg, Hindemith, et al. The Op. 25 Suite is an exquisite refraction of a Bach French Suite--but done in Schoenberg's 12-tone form. Here Gould ...

Japanese Folk Melodies2 reviews
Jean-Pierre Rampal, Ensemble Lunaire

Sony, 1990

A Gem!
This treatment of Japanese folk melodies by the artist Rampal is beautiful. Relaxing without being boring, simply put, I recommend this to persons who enjoy Japanese music or flute music.

Schoenberg - Pierrot lunaire ~ Herzgewächse ~ Ode to Napoleon / Schäfer, Pittman-Jennings, Ensemble ...17 reviews
Arnold Schoenberg, Pierre Boulez, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1998

One of the Best Schoenberg Discs Available...
This is a superb disc in many ways: it features three of Schoenberg's great pieces, one of which (Herzgewächse) is virtually unavailable anywhere else. Since the death of von Karajan, Boulez is now the greatest conductor in the world now working; and his understanding of Second Viennese School oeuvre is as insightful as Karajan's was. Christine Schäfer--for my money and to my ear--is the ...

Schoenberg: Pierrot lunaire, Op 21; The Book of the Hanging Gardens, Op. 158 reviews
Arnold Schoenberg, Arthur Weisberg, ...

Nonesuch, 1992

the best
This is the recording that made me fall in love with 20th century classical music. Hundreds of CD's of modern music later, this one remains very close to my heart. Pierrot is scary, poignant, strident, and sometimes annoying--it's a masterpiece of exaggerated emotion. If God incarnated as a drag queen, this is what He'd sing.

Guitar Music1 review
Ohana, Schmidt

Disques Montaigne, 2001

Multiple catalogue entries
This is not a review of the recording itself, but a notice to prospective buyers: There are (at least) three listings for this recording at Amazon, and two of them are listed as unavailable. The result is unscrupulous used dealers selling their copies at scalpers' prices. This recording is still in print: Look for the listing ASIN B0000DETDN.

Christine Schäfer/Pierre Boulez (Schumann - Dichterliebe / Schönberg - Pierrot lunaire)5 reviews
Christine Schafer, Natascha Osterkorn

Arthaus Musik, 2002

Compelling, hypnotic, sensual, disturbing, sublime, essential viewing
One Night. One Life is one of the first DVD recordings of Classical music that uses this new medium in a creative and interesting way. Instead of merely plonking a camera in front of Ms. Schäfer, both the Dichterliebe and the Pierrot Lunaire are turning into short films. I like this approach and I have watched this DVD repeatedly and I see and hear something new every time I experience this ...

Satie: The Complete Solo Piano Music3 reviews
Erik Satie, Jean-Yves Thibaudet

Decca, 2003

Yes, its worth five discs
Each disc averages about 75 minutes of music. Over six hours of Satie? Definitely yes. If you have an affinity for Satie's classic pieces you should not pass up this set. There are so many standout pieces in so many wonderful styles you can only leave this set with wonder. And Thibaudet seems made for this music. The best interpreter of Satie that I've heard. His technique is amazing with ...

The Magic of Satie11 reviews
Thibaudet, Satie

Decca, 2002

Beautiful simplicity of Satie's piano music
The French composer Erik Satie had a reputation in his lifetime of being an eccentric. Stravinsky later described him as the oddest person he had ever known. His music was very influential on other french composers Debussy and Ravel. For most of Satie's life he earned his living as a cafe pianist playing for very little money. Satie lived a life of extreme simplicity. He lived in a very small ...

Schoenberg: Pierrot lunaire - Lied der Waldtaube - Erwartung / Minton, J. Martin, J. Norman, Zukerman, ...8 reviews
Arnold Schoenberg, Ensemble InterContemporain, ...

Sony, 1993

my preferred version
Very much my preferred recording of Pierrot. She clearly sounds the written pitches before moving throughout the performance - this gives another line of counterpoint to the piece which is simply not there when the "singer" does not do that - as is the case in all other versions i have heard except the other more recent Boulez one. But I like this Minton version best.

Schoenberg: Pierrot lunaire; Webern: 2 Lieder, 5 Canons; Boulez: Improvisations sur Mallarmé Nos. 1-21 review
Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, ...

Hungaroton, 1994

Unforgettable performance
Admit it, you're looking at this because of Pierrot Lunaire, not the other works on this disk. Truth be told, the Boulez is a nice piece and the two Webern works are impeccable in conception and execution (and typically small!). The real treat here is a stunning vision of what may be the greatest 20th century vocal work. Erika Sziklay absolutely nails the feel of the madness, joy and fear in this ...

Music of Arnold Schoenberg 54 reviews
Schoenberg, Lunaire, ...

Koch Int'l Classics, 2000

Robert Craft delivers
I think this is one of the best versions of Schoenberg's groundbreaking composition. The individual from Bombay is obviously not someone who has an informed opinion on 20th century works. Robert Craft, Anja Silja and his ensemble deliver Pierrot Lunaire as though the composer were sitting in the recording studio with the musicians. Each song has been carefully sculpted to reveal the tender, ...

Arnold Schoenberg, Giuseppe Sinopoli, ...

Elektra / Wea, 1999

Hooray for balance!
This is one of an extremely small number of solo recordings in which those involved realised that, while the solo is most important, it is not the only thing going on. By that, I mean that you can hear everything the accompaniment does while still being able to hear the vocalists well. That in itself should be sufficient reason to buy this album; you'll hear everything that Schönberg wrote. ...

Music of Tribute, Volume 2 -- Claude Debussy
Vladimir Valjarevic: piano, Bela Bartok, ...

Labor, 2004

Heiner Stadler and Labor Records announce the release of a new CD devoted to the piano of Gabriel Fauré and his pupils. Fauré, who taught at the Paris Conservatoire, numbered some of the most gifted composers of the turn of the century among his students including Maurice Ravel, Georges Enesco, Florent Schmitt and Charles Koechlin. These four and three others were invited by the French publisher Durand to contribute pieces in honor of their ...

Schoenberg will be remembered long after "denis" is dust
For decades spoil sports like "denisdiderot" below have been attacking Schoenberg's 12 tone system, saying, for example, that his music has no relation to "natural acoustics" and to the way "human beings make sense of sound". Well, last I checked, I'm a human being, one who happens to love this music, and I join musicians and music enthusiasts around the globe ...

Voice & Virtuoso1 review
Schoenberg, Nelson, ...

Aca Digital, 1995

Excellent!!
The liner notes ask, and answer the question: "Why record yet another performance of Pierrot Lunaire?" Well, they've done a wonderful job, and they realize that the serialist style of music isn't limited to just portraying fear and suffering (a terrible misconception from so many people who can only think of horror-film soundtracks when they hear some of Schoenberg's lesser works.) If you ...

Schoenberg: Pierrot Lunaire4 reviews

Naxos, 2007

My Favorite Pierrot Lunaire
Wicked smiles, lascivious winks, histrionic fear, sardonic humor...Pierrot Lunaire! This is the recording to get, whether you are an initiate or veterna of Schoenberg's music. This cd brings out every nuance, and the recording quality is just intimate enough, without sacrificing the alternatingly spacious moments of the composition. Buy this rendition before any other.
