He could sing the phone book
Ibrahim Ferrer could sing the phone book and I would be enthralled. The man's voice was a treasure. This CD is not quite as good as Buena Vista Social Club, but almost nothing is. It's not as exciting as BVSC, but Ferrer is gone now, and any little phrase he sang is better than tons of other people's work.

Omara Sears my Synapses. Let her Blister yours, too..
Euphoria. Endorphin overload. Shake yourself a martini or something equally svelte, put this on, find the divan on the patio and just let all gringo unpleasantness evaporate into the Habana infused dusk. This is the best of all the Buena Vista Social Club productions, IMAO. And whatever that woman up in one of the featured reviews means in saying that this music isn't danceable, I have ...

Every track a gem
I've been carrying this CD from my car to the house (and back again) for the last 3 weeks. The backup singers will seduce you. Most noticeable is the sound of the instrumentalists, and in particular the delicate nuances they afford and, in general, how INCREDIBLY GOOD it all sounds together. If one is to assume that artist's albums are supposed to improve, in general, over time, then this is in ...

Buena Vista Social Club is an Experience in Cuban Music.
This critically acclaimed album is a favorite for many reasons. The Buena Vista Social Club was a popular club in Havana that held dances during the 1940s and 50s. This 14-song album not only features many of the veteran musicians who performed at that club during the height of its popularity, but also includes Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder (who ...

¡Perfeccion musical!
¡BRAVO!!

OMARA PORTUONDO & Orq. Julio Gutierrez "MAGIA NEGRA"
I am happy to see this great classic album re-issued again, this time with a much improved sound. Recorded in Havana, Cuba in 1958, this all time classic has remained in a place of preference among Omara's fans. First re-issued during the 90's in CD format by a now gone label, I think this album is of extraordinary importance since to my knowledge it is the first solo album recorded by the great ...

songs from beyond the soul
If you are lucky to come across compositions and reditions like this more than a few times in your life, you would consider yourself lucky indeed. And yet they are brought together in a unique collection / colaboration between one of Cuba's and Brazil's greatest interpreters of love songs. Some songs sung in Spanish and some in Portuguese but all with a refiness that is unequaled. If you are ...

Equal to the Best Recordings of Gurre-Lieder
Robert Craft is not ordinarily thought of as a master of ultraromantic music. One associates him with Stravinsky and the more advanced music of the Second Viennese School. Schoenberg was certainly the founder and guru of that movement, but his 'Gurre-Lieder' was composed before he ventured into atonality. It is a huge Romantic work, almost two hours long, that could almost have been written by ...

This is REAL TANGO, people!!!
My violin instructor is a good friend of Mr. Ruben Gonzalez (former concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony), and an Argentinian expatriate. He introduced me to the wonderful world of tango, especially that of Maestro Piazzola. These are some of the most original recordings of GREAT Tango music that you should not miss out on. There were only two recordings available when I checked out this page, ...

Christmas Guitars a pleasant surprise
This cd was a real surprise to me. The players aren't well known, but you would never guess that from hearing them. Their playing is very strong and very musical. What amazes me is the range of moods they create. You might think that an entire cd of guitar duet Christmas carols would soon wear out its welcome. But this cd never does. It's bold, serene, funny, witty, and even profound. ...
