The #1 Opera Album44 reviews
Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi, ...

Decca, 2001

The best gift ever.
I purchased this CD as a birthday gift for my sister. Because I personally know nothing about opera, I didn't know how to buy a single opera for her, or even which one she would like if I did know how to get it. So I settled on this "sampler" style Cd, and she just loved it. This is the best of the best of all opera arias and performances. My sister plays it all the time, and I think it is ...

Beethoven: Symphonies 5 & 7141 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Carlos Kleiber, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1996

Definitive Fifth, Great Seventh
The Fifth is very, very polished and sounds just like it should. What more could you say about a recording of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony? I mean, it's the Fifth Symphony! Next I'll review the Mona Lisa... I can say that this Fifth seems "faster" than some versions, but at the same time it feels like it has the exact right tempo. It is my favorite recording of the Fifth and probably my ...

Brahms: Complete Symphonies8 reviews
Johannes Brahms, Unspecified, ...

EMI Classics, 2009

In A Word: Incredible
Simon Rattle conducting Brahms? I never would have thought that this set would be worth acquiring, especially considering that I already own what I consider to be the best Brahms symphony cycles: Solti, Harnoncourt, Dohnanyi, Abbado, Bohm, and Karajan, then I started reading all of the glowing reviews on Amazon and other websites that said this cycle is one of the best ever recorded. Is that a ...

Beethoven's Wig: Sing Along Symphonies90 reviews
Beethoven's Wig

Rounder / Umgd, 2002

"Mommy, Mommy, it's Tchaikovsky . . ."
This is a fantastic CD on so many levels -- Perlmutter has added witty, silly, yet often educational lyrics to some of the most recognizeable melodies in classical music. Most of the lyrics include some information about the composer, so that anyone who listens a few times will at least learn the composer's name, perhaps the popular name of the melody, and a few other facts. For example, ...

Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue/An American In Paris21 reviews
George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, ...

Sony, 1990

Rhapsody in blue
I first heard Leonard Bernstein's version of Rahpsody in Blue in the early 1960s, on a 7" vinyl record. It has remained my favourite ever since. This digital issue on a CD is excellent. Nothing has been lost in the transition from analogue to digital recording, and it is every bit as enjoyable now as it was when I first heard it forty-five years ago.

Soprano Sarah Soars
What a rare treat to hear such a wonderful voice! The music transcends the various languages( Latin, Italian, French, Spanish and almost no English) and communicates directly, beyond intellect, deeper to sooth the soul. This we expect from Opera and Religious selections such as Pucinni's "Nessun Dorma" and Lloyd Webber's "Piu Jesu". A favorite is the solo rendition of "Time To Say Good-bye". ...

This particular recording is recommended in several reputable opera sources as the best recording of "Turandot." I have seen a live performance, and this recording will not disappoint.

Ultimate Classical Christmas Album of All Time4 reviews
Ultimate Classical Christmas Record of All Time

Sony, 2002

Breathtakingly beautiful!
Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful. We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico! It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.

O Holy Night / Luciano Pavarotti / Special Deluxe Edition (Decca)18 reviews
Vittoriano Benvenuti, Hector Berlioz, ...

Decca, 2005

An awesome musical experience
I believe that Luciano far exceeded Caruso. His voice reached out to everyone, except for that unfortunate foray into the "Georgio" film. He presented his music with a marvelous flair for detail. We shall miss him, so much.

Hooked on Classics13 reviews
Louis Clark, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Hooked on Classics, 2000

Wonderful Intro To the Classics
This arrangement includes pieces from some of the greatest classical music ever written, and while the work is definitely underscored from beginning to end by the permeating techno rhythm, I believe the intent of the work was/is to introduce classical music to the ears of an audience who may have never heard it outside of cartoons. In that regard, I think the album has been a stunning success! ...

Bernstein Century - Copland: Appalachian Spring, Rodeo, etc / Bernstein, New York PO49 reviews
Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, ...

Sony, 1997

Cult recordings!
Appalachian spring was first given by the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Artur Rodzinsky (October 4, 1945). According the very Copland, the music of the ballet takes as its point of departure the personality of Martha Graham. She borrowed it from the heading of one of hart Crane's poems, though the ballet seems to bear no relation to the text of the poem itself. Certainly, and ...
