Tito Gobbi

A great tribute for a truly great artist
If you want to know about Tito Gobbi, this is the set for you. Truly the very best of this phenomenal baritone, one of those rara avis in opera (both a great singer and a great actor). On both CDs, is Gobbi in his finest: from comedy (All'idea di quel metallo/Come Paride vezzoso) to tragedy (Nemico della Patria), from grand opera (Cruda, funesta smania) to verismo (Si puo?). The first CD ...

Aspects of Verdi and Bel Canto!
Mr. Bergonzi is a famous Verdi tenor and this collection is simply sublime, beyond words. His singing is both accented and lyrical, perhaps too lyric for the ideal Verdi voice. Bergonzi's Verdi comes with a bel canto approach. Well this is where we may separate a Verdi voice from Verdi style. Bergonzi is a Verdi stylist par excellence and deserves the highest respect possible where ...

A Great Anthology
I find the "Introuvables" series of EMI (Les Introuvables Du Chant Wagnérien, Les Introuvables du Chant Mozartien: 50 Years of Mozart Singing on Records, Les Introuvables du Chant Français [Box Set]) much more interesting than their "Record of Singing" series. It is true that in the latter one gets a much broader idea of whole span of the operatic experience in the time period covered; but in ...

Don't like modern music? You haven't heard THIS!
Everyone arguing that recent modern music took a wrong track with Schonberg and his followers needs to hear what happens when serialism goes to Italy, via Dallapiccola. I call him the 12-tone Puccini. What a vibrant, passionate, accessible composer who at the same time never sacrifices or panders.z Why isn't this wonderful opera on all the world's stages? The opening line of the mother ...

Magnificent Achievement
This set is a recorded testimony to both Verdi's genius and Placido Domingo's versatility. Through 70's, 80's, and 90's, Domingo recorded with three major labels -- DG, RCA, and EMI. Out of these three, DG captured the most Verdi recordings, so it only was right for it to combine what they already had with newly recorded material, mostly early Verdi arias (Chung & Gergiev conducting), plus some ...

Only the best
What a reasonably priced set, I got mine for $25. This collection has only the best baroque music in my opinion. Like the previous reviewer said it has a lot of trumpet music but I like brass. It's just not trumpet though, it has strings and other instruments (more brass) in a lot of the same pieces. Plus, most of the pieces on here are pretty lively so this won't put you to sleep.

More than is mentioned
Dallapiccola's Il Prigioniero is one of the great operatic works of the 20th century, but not nearly as well-known as it deserves. The other available recording (conducted very well by Esa Pekka Salonen) may serve to bring greater recognition to the work, but it would be unfortunate if this version were ignored or forgotten. The two soloists, Magda Laszlo and Mario Basiola, sing passionately ...
