11 Grand, Elegant and Serious Musical Tracks...
This is a marvelous collection of music. It includes Sondheim's most famous and popular melody, "Send in the Clowns" from a "Little Night Music", this CD version using only the strings. One of the best selections. The show premiered February 25, 1973 at the Sam S Shubert Theatre (from the CD insert). The insert contains details on each selection. There is also a written introduction to the CD ...

A Great Pops Companion CD
When it comes to Christmas and the Boston Pops, it's easy to wonder if this ensemble really needs another Christmas recording. We have multiple discs with the great Fiedler renditions of holiday music, and there are two fine discs under the direction of Conductor Laureate John Williams. Keith Lockhart has also released a holiday music disc. Why another? Well, when it comes to the Pops, creativity ...

"Celebration" is not strong enough a word
This review is by Crosley. I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of ...

A Must For Boston Pops Lovers
Poor Keith Lockhart did not have the easiest time when he first came to Boston. He made a few major mistakes. First, he shortened the 1812 Overture at the July 4th Concert at the Esplanade, which may have been a decision of the television stations carrying the broadcast, but it, went over with a thud. His first few Christmas concerts were not critically acclaimed, though crowds still attended. By ...

Great music but incorrect track listing!
These are three (or four) beautiful pieces of music, but has anyone actually listened to the CD? Track 1 (28:19) includes the entire "Bird and Bela in Bb" concerto, whereas tracks 2 (4:51) and 3 (6:08) are both Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring". Track 4 (7:53) is correctly listed as "Sebastian's Theme". It's unclear why "Rite of Spring" is in two parts--if they are separate performances, or if ...

Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay...
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and ...

Flutist Hubert Laws is joined by a large string orchestra on this set, which was arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky. Keyboardist Bob James is in the supporting cast. The focus is mostly on Laws' brilliant and appealing flute. Highlights include "Let Her Go," "Where Is the Love" and, particularly, "Amazing Grace." 1 Morning Star 2 Let Her Go 3 Where Is the Love? 4 No More 5 Amazing Grace 6 What Do You Think of This World Now?

I love Adam Guettel
This is an amazing work of emotional, passionate, and very creative music. Its facinating melodies are very complex and its themes are powerful. This is a masterpiece of artful composition, but it is not a CD for those with frivolous tastes. It is very beautiful and involved music so if you dwell on the music of Hairspray or Grease, this is definately not an item for you, but if you really ...

Like jazz? Ok. Like funk? Great. Like both? Perfect - get giant box
CTI records (as I've discussed already with Blue Note Records and Verve records) was a huge family in the 70's, frequently bringing mainstays such as Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Stanley Turrentine, Hubert Laws, George Benson, and Milt Jackson together into the studio for jammin'. Don Sebesky, whose eclectic career has ranged from the jazz and funk of the 70's to arranging for up-and-coming ...

*Great* jazz CD!
I'm one of those people who loves jazz, but doesn't know what CDs to buy, because there's a billion different styles and some styles are less pleasing than others. Well this CD captures everything I love about Jazz... it's Duke Ellington, kick-started by Don Sebesky, and it's fantastic.

An under-rated classic.
I love this recording! It contains some of the warmest and most intimate playing of any Jim Hall album I've ever heard. I've never understood why it never caught on with many other Jim Hall fans or critics. I suppose, it's been overshadowed by his other wonderful CTI recording "Concierto". And many people simply prefer his less highly-produced live or small group recordings. That's ...

Excellent Arangements and Fine Musicianship
Don Sebesky does an excellent job of bringing the artistry of seasoned artists like Bob Brookmeyer and Toots Thielemans, as well as younger stalwarts such as Hubert Laws and Eddie Daniels to the session. The arrangements run the gamut from sparse to orchestral. And while this is a tribute to a great pianist, there are no keyboards here. This leaves room for the fine rhythm work of guitarist ...

The Best Thing for You

This CD features previously unissued material from the same sessions that resulted in You Can't Go Home Again and, if anything, the music is a touch better. While an alternate take of Don Sebesky's "El Morro" uses a larger group, the other five performances find Baker accompanied just by a rhythm section (pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Tony Williams and, on one song, guitarist Gene Bertoncini). As a special bonus, altoist Paul ...
Don Sebesky : Three Works For Jazz Soloists & Symphony Orchestra

When Don Sebesky recorded Three Works for Jazz Soloists and Symphony Orchestra in 1979, the idea of combining jazz and European classical music was hardly new. Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and others were being influenced by classical music back in the 1920s, and the 1950s found everyone from the Modern Jazz Quartet and Gunther Schuller to Gil Evans and Jimmy Giuffre blending jazz and classical. Nonetheless, jazz-classical ...
