wanderful performances
Tchaikovsky - Eugene Onegin / Fleming, Vargas, Hvorostovsky, Gergiev, Carsen [Metropolitan Opera 2007] It is very nice to watch a DVD with beautiful scenery; but it is also true that you can get distracted, that is why even the scenography was very simple, I was more focused on the artist's performance, there singing, and acting, and also the drama, for those reasons I enjoyed so much, the ...

Lullabies for the young and young at heart
Purchased the CD from Amazon.com when my daughter asked me to find some soothing music to help her first child relax and fall to sleep. They have and are still enjoying the CD very often.

The entire family loves this CD
From 4 years old to 40 years old, each of us enjoys Beethoven's Wig. We have #1 and #2 and I could not tell you which the kids enjoy more - but I do have a slight preference for #1. I'm online now getting ready to purchase #3 and #4 will be for Christmas. I'm also buying #1 for a baby shower gift. My friend is not particularly "into" classical music but she laughed a good bit listening to our ...

Great Music for you and baby!
I think the music on here is very good. I love listening to it and my baby enjoys it as well. When I play it, she settles down and seems very attentive or sleep; I really can't tell the difference at this point. Hopefully this CD will have the same affect when she is born.

A New Kind of 'Cross-over'
Probably so, since the compilation in this CD includes quite a number of Chinese tracks. Unlike the 'Dragon Songs' or other albums of LL, this is a hybrid compilation of Western piano music and Chinese works. LL excels in the Chinese tracks. Some of the tracks are a debut release (by LL, if not universally). LL's musical upbringing starts from Chinese folk music, not 'Tom and Jerry', ...

I play this every night to put my son to sleep. I hear music is supposed to be good brain development for math and being a math teacher I figured I try it. Playing this music seems to relax my son and puts him to sleep. It even puts my husband to sleep...

This thing kills!
OK, this is not a great musical experience, but a hodgepodge of the loud, vigorous and stirring parts. For what it is, and purports to be, it deserves 5 stars. If nothing else, it has the best cannon fusillade of any 1812 overture I have heard. It also includes some of the best versions ever of several compositions, such as Kunzel's rendition of the Fucik favorite, Entry of the Gladiators. ...

Sumptuous Singing, Soulful Songs
That Dmitri Hvorostovsky is one of the most talented and admired singers before the public is beyond doubt. His star status is assured. He came to prominence in his twenties as winner of the Cardiff BBC Singer of the World Contest in 1989, edging out Bryn Terfel. Since then he has sung at all the major opera houses and concert halls. He is a noted recitalist and in this disc he sings romances ...

A common man's point of view.
I've had this ballet for quite a while, meaning to write a review on it, but just haven't gotten a "round tuit". If you have never gotten a "round tuit" (There is such a thing), you have not missed a heck of a lot. One of the most important things I wish for you to "get" is, that you should NOT believe everything you read in these reviews (even mine), because they are ALL debatable opinions. ...

As it should be
In years past, I had never been able to embrace Van Cliburn's famed Tchaikovsky Piano Conerto #1. Poor sound reproduction on previous cd releases just did not allow the power of this incredible performance to shine through. All that has changed with this RCA Living Stereo Hybrid SACD edition. The brillantly improved sound and the enhanced spatial seperation on this version makes Cliburn's ...

Exceptional Milstein
Violin virtuoso Nathan Milstein does justice to Tchaikovsky and Brahms in a pair of remarkable performances from 1959 and 1961, respectively. The liner notes are woefully lacking (no information provided on Milstein), but the sound quality remains excellent. Another winner from EMI's Seraphim budget label.

One of the best renditions, ever!
I've noticed that some folks are a tad critical of the treatment, fidelity, balance, pacing, etc. of this performance, not considering when this recording was made. And, perhaps, not recognizing why it was made in the first place. It reminds me of my reaction to a recording of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" that I caught mid-stream in the car on WRR radio in Dallas. It thought it was the ...

A cheerful confection
Seeing this version reminds me of what happens when you buy a new television. One set may look to have all you might want, but put it alongside others in the shop and differences appear which change your mind.My view of this work falls into the first category- to accept it for what it is as a production filmed of a company that has been performing it for a very long time and as a star vehicle for ...

Bernstein is strongest is Symphonies 1,4,5,and 6
Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) recorded all 6 Tchaikovsky Symphonies with the New York Philharmonic for Columbia records-now Sony Classical - in the 1960s and early 1970s. Bernstein later re-recorded Symphonies 4,5,and 6 with the New York Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. In this box then are Bernstein's only recordings of Tchaikovsky's first 3 symphonies. Symphony 1 in G Minor, "Winter ...

Ravishingly Russian
This is Russian music of the late 19th-Century, full of emotional angst and turmoil. Track 8, from Rimsky-Korsakov's Four Songs, Op. 2 No. 2 "Plenivshis' rozoy, solovey" (Captivated by the Rose, Nightingale) is about the unrequited love of a Nightingale for a Rose. While the Rose listens to the beautiful song, it does not understand why the song is so solemn. Perhaps not understanding` Russian ...

Classical Favorites From A True Virtuoso of Piano
Van Cliburn is my Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms all rolled into one virtuoso of piano. I've seen one of his live concerts and collected some of his remarkable recordings enough to truly attest that he can expressively play rich and varied masterpieces of the greatest and most brilliant, pianistic composers from Baroque to ...
