First Emperor of China3 reviews

Razor Digital Entertainment, 2006

Wonderful and Short...

+ The First Emperor

This docudrama, which I must admit I don not yet own on DVD, left a great impression on me, when I got to watch it on the IMAX screen of the Museum of Natural Art of New York. In a very short lapse of time, all the essential elements that made up the time and life of the first Emperor of Xin (or ...

Superbly insightful, beautifully visual hi-tech history

This British series examining great historical civilizations and their cultural and artistic artifacts first became known to me through the History Channel, which broadcast several episodes. Intrigued by what I saw, I decided to purchase this box-set labeled volume 3. It contains six 50 minute long ...

The Spartans17 reviews
Bettany Hughes

Pbs Paramount, 2004

Within my top five dvds in the past decade

+ Two-Hearted Review
+ Some debatable content but overall very good - 4.5 stars actually

The dvd covers the salient historical events, but also covers aspects of Spartan male life that they never taught us in high school. Covers Spartan women (enjoyed the story of Kynisca ... as will you). A cerebral/intellectual approach which exposes the very many unpleasant aspects of Spartan ...

Empires - The Roman Empire in the First Century13 reviews
Narrated By Sigourney Weaver

PBS Paramount, 2005

A superb and all too brief look at the Roman Empire of the first century CE and how it was able to reach political stability

The Roman Empire was truly an amazing political, economic and social entity. A wide variety of cultures and tribes were conquered and absorbed into the Empire. From the dark skinned North Africans to the blonde and fair-skinned people of Northern Europe to the swarthy inhabitants of Judea, they all ...

Secrets of Ancient Empires: The First Beliefs
First Beliefs

Kultur Video, 2006

The bloody act of human sacrifice combined with bizarre ritualized acts formed the backdrop to ancient organized religious systems. This powerful episode of the Secrets of Ancient Empires collection peers into the darker side of life in the ancient world, where acts that appear immoral to the modern eye were an integral part of temple life.

Journey Along the Silk Road3 reviews
Journey Along the Silk Road

Tokyo Shock, 2005

slice of life along the silk road

I read the two reviews below, laughed and decided this imperfect video was right for me. I'd rather watch wall climbing and lemon eating and than a polished tourist sites video. The film transports you to a train station where Chinese police clamp down on the photographer, street life in ...

The Silk Road DVD Collection15 reviews

Central Park Media, 2002

A brilliant view of Asian landscapes and culture

+ great
+ Unique resource on the Silk Road

This is a truly superb documentary. The landscapes are truly breath taking. It's also a history lesson about a lot of the events that took place here. You get right into Chinese history at the ground level as you travel on one of the most ancient and important trade routes in the world.

Empires - Napoleon7 reviews
Napoleon

Pbs (Direct), 2006

Vive L'Empereur!

+ The narrative moves quickly, but totally omits Napoleon's affairs in the New World.

This is a nice PBS production on Bonaparte, and can serve as a good introduction to the period, but it glosses over much about that exciting era. I understand that to truly do the emperior justice a bio much longer than this would be required. Unfortunately we go from Austerlitz, to Russia in ...
