Housekeeping: A Novel151 reviews
Marilynne Robinson

Picador, 2004

A beautiful, haunting book

+ profundity at your fingertips
+ Moving and memorable (mostly)

Marilynne Robinson's masterfully told story of an atypical "housekeeping" arrangement is strange, funny, sad, lyrical, and inspiring. It is one of the most beautiful books I have read in a long time. I found myself savoring the words, reading aloud to myself. This is a wonderful book.

Independence Day123 reviews
Richard Ford

Vintage, 1996

Ford Creates a Postive Thinking Angstrom -- There is No Running Here [P '96]

+ In My Top Five
+ Something to Cheer About

In "Independence Day", Richard Ford's depiction of post-marital devolution (divorce) parallels the lack of marital (or life) bliss shown in other classics: John Updike's "rabbit run" or John O'Hara's "Appointment in Samarra." This book's protagonist, Frank Bascombe, is not another Harry Angstrom ...

Denis Johnson

Harper Perennial, 1993

Children of loneness

+ I read the first couple stories...
+ Aimless Days of the Addicted

In Denis Johnson's stunning collection of short stories "Jesus' Son", there is an image that stays with you most of the time. This is the picture of loneness and desolation. The Human Stain: A Novel196 reviews
Philip Roth

Vintage, 2001

Recommending Philip Roth is a little like recommending sex...

+ A smart novel which will stay in your mind for days
+ Philip Roth = Genius

...It's so obvious it hardly needs saying. Coleman Silk is a professor ousted from his position on false charges of racism, and, at 71, carrying on a torrid and secret affair with an illiterate 34-year-old cleaning woman. But when it comes to secrets, that's the least of Silk's. Reading Roth ...

The Sportswriter106 reviews

sports for the mind

Last night I finished reading Richard Ford's The Sportswriter. I read it a couple years after reading Independence Day. Although I didn't love Independence Day, I was curious to get back to the main character of both books, Frank Bascombe, and see what he had done earlier in his life. I think ...
