The Chess Kid's Book of Tactics (Chess) 34 reviews David Macenulty
Random House Puzzles & Games, 2003
Excellent Explanations and Examples of Basic Tactics
+ Perfect for Elementary Kids
I own more than two hundred chess books and I've been teaching chess to kids in both public and private schools in California for ten years. In my opinion this book gives very clear explanations of the concepts behind many of the most basic chess tactics. Tactical puzzles are organized by theme ...

The Chess Kid's Book of the King and Pawn Endgame (Chess) 19 reviews David Macenulty
Random House Puzzles & Games, 2003
Great introduction to a complicated topic
+ Very useful... a must read + Timing is everything
An engaging overview of a difficult topic, how to play when there are only Kings and Pawns on the board. Macenulty eloquently covers the basic ideas (square of the pawn, opposition, triangulation (if you don't know what these terms mean, then get the book!)).
This book fills a nice void in a ...

The Chess Advantage in Black and White: Opening Moves of the Grandmasters (Chess) 11 reviews Larry Kaufman
Random House Puzzles & Games, 2004
The Chess Advantage in Black and White: Opening Moves of the Grandmasters
+ The Chess Advantage in Black and White: Opening Moves of the GMs
The Chess Advantage in Black and White by IM Larry Kaufman is something new. There have been many opening repertoire books have appeared before but either they aim merely to get the student out of the opening at all costs or demand large chunks of time to memorize lines for an opening advantage at ...

The Chess Kid's Book of Checkmate (Chess) 10 reviews David Macenulty
Random House Puzzles & Games, 2004
Great Puzzles - Kids LOVE this book!
+ attractive presentation
My son received this book as a prize at chess camp a few years ago. He loves the puzzles in this book. I started a chess club at his new school and bring the book into the club and the kids ages 5-15 LOVE to work the puzzles in this book. I love the way the chapters are focused and then the kids ...

Chess Openings the Easy Way (Chess) 6 reviews Nick Defirmian
Random House Puzzles & Games, 2003
just what I wanted
+ Chess Openings almost the easy way
Disagree with other negative reviews here. I actually enjoyed this book very much and it fitted my purposes exactly. it's a handy shortened reference text from MCO. I'd rather not wade through a huge tome to learn the major openings.

United States Chess Federation's Official Rules of Chess, Fifth Edition (Chess) 11 reviews U.S. Chess Federation
Random House Puzzles & Games, 2003
Audience: Tournament Directors and Experienced Tournament Players
+ Useful Book + Complete US Rules of Chess
It appears that it isn't understood that the "United States Chess Federations'Official Rules of Chess" is NOT a book for a newcomer to be learning the rules from. It is a technical book suited for tournament directors and experienced chess players. Overlooked, is another book in it's first edition ...

How To Play Good Opening Moves (Chess) 9 reviews Edmar Mednis
Random House Puzzles & Games, 2002
Cannot beat basic principles
+ SUPERB instructional book marred by serious typographical errors! + Masterpiece full of typos
I have not played competitive chess for over fifteen years now but have decided to get back into the game. I know how important the openings are because there is nothing worse than losing a game before you even start. I also know how boring it can be memorizing different sets of moves. This book ...
