Ya Gotta Get This One
Bought this on for my wife and cannot for the life of me figure out how I ever missed seeing this movie. The cast was wonderful, and refreshing to both watch and listen to. I also have the Reginald Owen and the Alistair Sims versions of A Christmas Carol but this one is in a class by itself. You will love it.

Washington Square (1997)39 reviews
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Albert Finney

Walt Disney Video, 1999

DVD: Washington Square
Washington Square is a remake of The Heiress, which starred Olivia De Havilland and Montgomery Clift in 1949. Amazon.com was the only place I could find this DVD. Jennifer Jason Leigh is superb as the lonely young woman in search of happiness, and Albert Finney is hateful as her overbearing father who does not love her. I enjoy this version just as much as the original.

A Man of No Importance7 reviews
Albert Finney, Brenda Fricker

Sony Pictures, 1996

importance is subjective
This debut from Suri Krishnamma is quite wonderful. Set in Dublin in 1963, it opens with Eartha Kitt singing "Let's Do it" and Albert Finney reading Oscar Wilde, so we know something particular is in the wind. Finney is a bus conductor who is inspired to mount a production of Salome after meeting Tara Fitzgerald. The film shows the rehearsals in the local church hall, and slowly reveals Finney's ...

Orphans (1987)14 reviews
Albert Finney, Matthew Modine

Warner Home Video, 1998

Mesmerizing performances
Lyle Kessler's powerful play brought very stagely to the screen, featuring three extraordinary performances. Two bothers share a dilapidated house in Newark. The older brother, Treat (Matthew Modine), is a petty thief with a wild temper who steals to put food on the table. The younger boy, Philip (Kevin Anderson), is kept a prisoner in the house, afraid to go out for fear of germs and a million ...

Uncle Tom's Cabin20 reviews
Avery Brooks, Kate Burton

Republic Pictures, 1997

Great movie
Although it has been many years since I read the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I don't know how well the movie follows the book; its been too long since I read the book, and I don't remember all the details, but the story makes a strong statement about slavery. How moving is the tremendous suffering of black families as they are ripped apart by masters and owners who refused to see them ...

Murder on the Orient Express107 reviews
Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall

Paramount, 1998

A Visually Beautiful, Clever, Well-Acted, and Faithful Adaptation
MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is an impressive movie. Well-acted, beautifully shot and lit, and with a sharp tongued script and stunning sets, it is a masterpiece, much like the genius book by Agatha Christie is considered today. The story follows detective Hercule Poirot (a heavily accented Albert Finney) as he has to solve the murder of Mr. Ratchett (Richard Widmark) on the infamous Orient ...

My favorite Childhood film
I love this movie. My favorite song in the movie is It's a Hard Knock Life for us! This movie was everything I loved about musical genre the plot enhanced by singing and dancing. The best scene is when Annie goes to Daddy Warbucks Mansion. I truly would have loved to be in that bed the maids were fixing up it looked comfy and warm like a cloud on a summer's day. I especially adored everyone who ...

Miller's Crossing228 reviews
Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden

20th Century Fox, 1998

ALL WEEPY
I thought I might go all weepy at the beauty of this film. Albert Finney, as Leo is a glorious stand-out--somehow I knew he would have on spats-- and his "come out blazing" scene is glorious. John Turturro is right on as a sniveling weasel, but Gabriel Byrne as Tom is a dream. All the way through the movie, I was wondering, is Tom planning all this, or is he ad libing as the needs of self ...

Nostromo8 reviews
Claudio Amendola, Paul Brooke

Fox Home Entertainment, 1997

Archimedes Succeeds
When Archimedes declared that he could lift the earth with a long enough lever, the extent of his endeavors became readily apparent. Joseph Conrad in "Nostromo" attempted much more using the lever of language. He created his own universe with the finest prose that has ever been written. The BBC attempted not much less converting this perhaps best ever work of literature into film. I congratulate ...

Big Fish (Dol Slip)451 reviews
Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney

Sony Pictures, 2004

great movie, pointless BROWN COVER version
This review is about the version with the brown cover with a leafless tree behind the black letters BIG FISH. It contains two things: the exact same movie you get for a dollar more than half the price of this version and a hardbound booklet. The booklet contains thirteen pages with one or two sentences on it, and ten pages with a drawing or picture. That's it. If you think such a booklet is worth ...

Saturday Night & Sunday Morning12 reviews
Albert Finney, Shirley Anne Field

Continental Distributing, 1997

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
Another top quality, British "kitchen-sink" drama from the 1960s, Reisz's film launched Finney to prominence after a promising debut in Tony Richardson's "The Entertainer." Drowning five days of stagnation in one night's revelry--or is it oblivion?--Arthur is the quintessential "angry young man," as he is going nowhere and won't let himself care, either about short-term inconveniences or ...

Two for the Road96 reviews
Audrey Hepburn, Albert Finney

20th Century Fox, 1998

I Cried at the ending!
My god this movie is so touching and romantic. It is perhaps the only movie that I cried since Titanic. The best performance from Audrey Hepburn and my most favorite movie after Sabrina and My Fair Lady. I was surprise when watching this movie because it is not the typical Audrey Hepburn movie (you know what I mean). And I seriously think it is hilarious when Audrey actually cussed in the ...

Under the Volcano19 reviews
Albert Finney, Jacqueline Bisset

Universal Home Video, 2002

An Existential Epic!!!
Firstly, I have never read the cult novel which is the basis of the film. I am reviewing the film as just that - a film - and what a film this is! A class act - and an acting class all-in-one. Albert Finney is pitch-perfect in every instance: voice and body language are used to create an absolutely authentic characterization of the Consul. (When Mr. Finney was not awarded the Oscar for his ...

Wolfen46 reviews
Ralph Bell, Dehl Berti

Warner Home Video, 1999

4.75 Stars. There is life that preys on us as we prey on the earth. A Horror film with a message.
Wolfen is not a werewolf movie, don't go into this film expecting or wanting that, go into this film with an open mind. At the beginning of the film a real estate tycoon is killed, his wife, and there driver by something unknown. A New York City Detective Dewey Wilson is put on the case who is played by Albert Finney. Dewey has had personal problems, he eats donuts after running and he ...

Rich in Love11 reviews
Albert Finney, Jill Clayburgh

MGM (Video & DVD), 1997

Wonderful movie
This movie will appeal to all people who have "a couple" of years of marriage behind them. It is a story of a family falling apart as "love has come to its conclusion". After 27 years of marriage time has changed: All the members of the family still love each other but in different ways. Mother and father live apart but still respect each other. The two daughters slowly find their own way - one ...

The Wall: Live in Berlin137 reviews
Bryan Adams, Leonard Cheshire

Polygram Video, 1996

The planets aligned
There will probably never be another production with this much magic involved. The time was the Berlin Wall coming down, the place was Berlin. The crowd numbered in the tens of thousands. Luck and God was on their side to pull this off in so little time. AMAZING!!! There could not have been a better celebration of such a historical event in time.
