Harlow Excels at Comedy
I've seen alot of Harlow films, and in my opinion, this is one of the best. It's funny, upbeat, and although the costumes aren't as striking as in some of her other films, I think that it suits her character. Harlow is perfectly cast and in her element in this film.

Action so fast and funny you'd swear The Keystone Cops directed it
Bombshell keeps viewers laughing all the way while giving them an inside look at the abuse of stars under the old Hollywood studio system. Other reviewers are right--the lines ARE funny and double entendres pop out at you all throughout the film. Jean Harlow plays an actress being driven crazy by her mooching family and the movie studio where she works. The striking similarities between Harlow's ...

"Dinner for Always"
My fellow reviewers have already written so much, and so incisively, that all I want to add is this: As far as I'm concerned, THIS movie represents just what "Old Hollywood" could do, when not hampered by censors or infatuated with over-the-top "messages." And yet there ARE signposts: for all the laughs, Cukor doesn't let us off scot-free. Bankruptcy, blackmail, suicide --Cukor helps us through ...

The Public Enemy is a Great Film!
James Cagney makes a great impression in this film about an impoverished man who turns to crime to find fame, money and women. His older brother is an upstanding if imperfect man who works for little pay, takes care of his mother and goes to war when requested for his country. Who is the better man? Sometimes it seems hard to tell but obviously Cagney is the biggest danger to his family, ...

"I once knew a man who made a joke like that. He was run over by a truck."
Imagine the lush heat of the jungle and the brutish, sex-starved men that live there. All that heat is present in Red Dust, the story of the manager of a rubber plantation (Clark Gable) and his lust for a prostitute (Jean Harlow) and a society wife (Mary Astor). This is heady stuff for the early 30s, but thankfully plenty passed by the lax censorship of the pre-code era. We've got it all with ...

They don't make comedies like this anymore!
This is a wonderful movie with a great cast: Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy, William Powell and Spencer Tracey, you really can't get much better then that. The writing in this movie is superb and very witty, nothing like they write for today's films. The comedy is laugh out loud funny. William Powell is especiallt great in this movie. He has a scene with some very funny physical comedy in this movie ...

For Harlow
Jean Harlow was the original blonde bombshell, and unlike Marilyn Monroe who came after her and tried to imitate her, Jean really could ACT, and she really had "IT", the star-quality thingy aura, while Marilyn just looked pretty on screen without being as witty or ingenious as Harlow. Saratoga was, as everyone knows, her last film, and you can totally see the sickness in her, she looks weary and ...

Jean Harlow Shines in A Overlooked Role
Movie buffs know and love the Jean Harlow of the glossy sex comedy classics she made at MGM - DINNER AT EIGHT, LIBELED LADY, BOMBSHELL, etc. but Jean was also a wonderful little dramatic actress capable of giving moving, heartfelt performances like in this little gem. Jean is just terrific as a dreamy cannery worker who dreams of a better life but has pinned her hopes on her boorish beau, ...

The STARS are the STANDOUT in this Moving Melodrama!
I have to disagree with Mr. Maltin's review. The superb charm and talent of Mr. William Powell and Jean Harlow are definitely enough to pull you through the so called "phony and tired plotline". It' a pure joy to watch them, they'll make you laugh one minute, and tear your heart out at the next. This film was an unexpected delight. Once you manage to sit through the first and overly long ...

A Masterpiece, Produced and Directed by a Young Genius
Other reviewers have pretty much covered the plot, actors' flaws, and Jean Harlow. I remember seeing the film years ago as a boy before WW2 and had forgotten just how good it was from many aspects, so many aspects I can't cover them all. The faithful restoration and translation to DVD is near impossible to believe. The purity of the film can't be better. The original cinematography, lighting, ...

Stan & Ollie's final silent film
SYNOPSIS-- Hired as an exclusive hotel's doorman (Ollie) and coachman (Stan), the boys are at first mistaken for newly-arrived royalty. Once the royal party DOES present itself, L&H assume their new jobs. Sight gags include elevator problems, hassles with cabbies and Jean Harlow's skirt hem getting caught in a revolving door. DOUBLE WHOOPEE was the very last of the Laurel & Hardy silent ...

One of their last silent films
The boys have jobs as repo men. And they are out to repossess a radio from Edger Kennedy. For once Edger is on the run from the boys instead of the other way around. But Kennedy is a slippery old cuss, and L&H have to get creative to serve papers on him.

PLATINUM BLONDE
Platinum Blonde (1931) is a delightful movie. I agree with you S.A. Alukonis "susansqueezy." I too just LOVED Robert Williams. He was so wonderful in his role. He was also on his way to becoming a great actor! In Platinum Blonde, Robert Williams is hilarious with his dry humor. He took the movie! It was so much fun to watch. A few minutes into the movie, I couldn't help but wonder who is ...

The Blonde Bombshell
This Ted Turner Pictures documentary is hosted by Sharon Stone lit superbly and dressed by Valentino. Although it's clear Stone feels an affinity with the "brazen gutsy" Harlow, Stone's appearance cannot altogether disguise her reading of the teleprompter and the odd physical poses she stands in. If this can be blamed on director Tom McQuade, we can also laugh when Stone repeats Harlow's need to ...

Gable And Harlow Rock!!!
This movie is witty, watchable and utterly touching. And now often do you get to see Jean Harlow (or any actress of this era, for that matter) give another woman a swift punch in the jaw? (Twice!) After Harlow's Ruby is sent to a reformatory after getting mixed up with Gable's Edward Hall (he of that cheesy yet endearing crooked smile), her predicament becomes all the more complicated when she ...

Jean Harlow at her best!!!
I could not disagree more with the reviewers who claim Harlow is not the real "dish" in this risque (at the time) pre-code comedy. This was the first film Harlow made after Howard Hughes sold her contract to MGM for $30,000 (Hughes would later claim $60,000), and this is the vehicle (along with "Red Dust")which catapulted her to superstardom. She would ultimately become one of the best loved ...
