The Century-America's Time (Boxed Set) [VHS]
ABC News, 1999
This is a great series and invaluable if you are an educator. My only regret (and question) is why don't they convert it to DVD format?
Shadowlands (1993) [VHS]
Hbo Home Video, 1995
This film makes everybody cry...
Naysayers may complain that the plot is creaky and the set-ups old-fashioned, but nobody can wring out tears like Debra Winger. She never plays a false note and she forces a performance out of Anthony Hopkins like I never thought possible. I recently invited some very hard-hearted friends over to see this, all men, and they were all sobbing by the end. It isn't that the premise was romantic, ...
Anne of Green Gables [VHS]
Walt Disney Video, 1995
How Can One Not Love Anne of Green Gables?
As a kid I would wait for months when the cable company gave us the Disney Channel free for ONE WHOLE WEEK! During that week they would always play the Anne of Green Gables series. This series is something I grew up with, and always cherished for they do not make film for TV like this anymore. Ok...great series!! As for the DVD collection it is a must-have for all you Anne Shirley fans. It ...
Stephen King's The Stand (Boxed Set) [VHS]
Republic Pictures, 1995
Stephen King's The Stand
I love this extravaganza. The video is a great rendition of the Book which is really much better. This is one of King's early works, and I think one of his best. Full of apocalptic Mythology, Good versus Evil, the works! The story is great too!
The Thorn Birds - The Complete Miniseries [VHS]
Warner Home Video, 1995
Read book and the series is very similiar, the Missing years is not too great but interesting.
Last of the Dogmen [VHS]
Hbo Home Video, 1996
The movie is a classic.
I am happy to have a DVD edition of one of my favorite movies. Legitimate copies are hard to find and the service was excellent.
The Temptations [VHS]
Charles Malik Whitfield
Evergreen Ent, 1999
This is a very good movie. It brings back great memories each time I view it.
Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (6 Piece Collector's Box Set) [VHS]
A&E Home Video, 1996
GREATLY IMPROVED TRANSFER
This new 2010 digitally restored "Pride and Prejudice" is, indeed, worlds better than the previous 2001 Special Edition "P&P," which as all of us who bought the previous DVD found out, was pretty terrible. Well worth replacing in my opinion. Now I wish that A&E would see fit to digitally restore "Jewel in the Crown."
Son of The Morning Star [VHS]
Republic Pictures, 1998
Very Over Due on DVD or Blue Ray
Hokahay! Not much I can add to what has already been stated about this movie. One of the very best and I still watch it converted. Still not the quality a studio would send out on DVD / Blue Ray hopefully. I agree with several that this is way over due to be in DVD form. Sadly I have been waiting since 2004. Get with it Republic or the Gods that decide which is on dvd form. Time to move it and ...
Baseball - A Film by Ken Burns [VHS]
Mary Pratt (III)
Pbs Home Video, 1995
Baseball - 9 Up, 9 Down
Making a film like this, on such a subject - and making it very watchable - is no small undertaking. Of course there will be omissions, biases, etc., but how could you please everyone? Some of the Good: (1) attention paid to the game's early days and players; (2) the time spent on Ruth - it is appropriate that his presence looms over the program the way his achievements loom over the game; (3) ...
Teletubbies - Nursery Rhymes [VHS]
Pbs Home Video, 1999
Very Fun and Very Cute
Setting aside the controversy about the Teletubbies, this is a great video. The Teletubbies are easy to like and have appeal to young children. My son enjoyed them until he was about two and a half and I find my daughter is moving on from their shows at about the same age. They sing and dance and talk in simple terms. They play and enjoy life. In this video they concentrate on Nursery Rhymes ...
Yoga for the Rest of Us with Peggy Cappy [VHS]
Wgbh Boston, 2003
This DVD is a great introduction into yoga. It goes through many stretches and balance poses, constantly grading them for where ever you are physically. I appreciate the modifications she uses with a chair as quickly dropping and rising to the floor is not something I do well. As i continue to use the video i can feel my ability increasing. This is not for people who have good flexibility or ...
Cold Sassy Tree [VHS]
Turner Home Ent, 1998
Cold Sassy Tree
Very thought provoking and interesting. Enjoyed family dynamics.I liked that it does not let you know what happened until the end.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella [VHS]
Sony Pictures, 2002
We love Cinderella because we remember it so fondly
As I was going thru over 200 reviews of the classic, it struck me that most of them were from people who had seen the original broadcast in 1965 and the story, songs and actors stuck with them...I'm sure Hollywood wishes all their movies did that the way this Cinderalla has done for all of us. It was never about the best sets, most well known actors or updating a plot that has stood the test of ...
Exit to Eden [VHS]
Hbo Home Video, 1997
I bought it for a friend who wanted it. I have never seen it, but the packaging was perfect.
Tales From the Hood [VHS]
Clarence Williams III
Hbo Home Video, 1997
Tales From the Hood
When three drug dealers are called to a funeral parlor to collect a stash of drugs, they are greeted by the creepy, eccentric Mr. Simms , who proceeds to tell them four moralistic tales of terror regarding the deceased who lie in his parlor. The first tale concerns a man murdered by crooked police officers and the officer who begins hearing his voice from beyond the grave to avenge his death. The ...
Band of Brothers [VHS]
Hbo Home Video, 2002
Loved the series first time around on HBO, ended up buying Blu-ray version for my father. Good concept and good cast, great directing, if you like WWII stories, this one will definitely capture and hold your attention.
The Dollmaker [VHS]
Playhouse Video, 1992
An outstanding film that should be made available on DVD. Jane Fonda portrays realistically a woman of her time. The lessons taught in this movie are numerous and important. I highly recommend it be re-issued on DVD.
Treasure Island (1990) [VHS]
Turner Home Ent, 2001
Treasure Island - best production
This is the best performance of this story that I have ever seen. They got EVERYTHING right: acting, cinematography, music (awesome score from the Chieftans).... I remain completely mystified as to why this prodcution is not available on DVD!!!
Sesame Street - Kids' Favorite Songs [VHS]
Sesame Street, 1999
This dvd is great. The only down side is that it is so short. It feels like I turn it on one minute and the next it's over.
