Mobile By Alexander Calder [VHS]
Mobile-By Alexander Calder
Homevision, 2000
The first work placed in the National Gallery's East Building was the last major piece by Alexander Calder, the inventor of the mobile as an art form. Mobile: By Alexander Calder takes viewers behind the scenes as Calder, architect I.M. Pei, artist/engineer Paul Matisse, and museum officials meet the challenges of building this complex work.

Don't buy it
Not good at all. Only 30 minutes, very old, and not a lot of content. It's a walk through the gallery with a video camera, most of the time you're looking at people. I only bought it because I saw an excellent PBS show a while back and thought this was going to be similar.
Calder's Circus
Roland Films on Art
Calder's Circus from Roland Films on Art. Alexander Calder's fascination with the circus began in his mid-twenties, when he published illustrations in a New York journal of Barnum and Bailey's Circus, for which he held a year's pass. It was in Paris in 1927 that he created the miniature circus celebrated in this film - tiny wire performers, ingeniously articulated to walk tightropes, dance, lift weights, and engage in acrobatics in the ring. The ...

Great film for kids in music class!
This is a FANTASTIC film that should be in the libraries of every elementary and intermediate grades music teacher. I have used it as a way to introduce Handel's music and talk about the Baroque era. I teach inner-city kids, who loved the film and were VERY open to learning more about Handel and his music after seeing it! The story is entertaining and funny--fictional, of course, while ...

"Not A Word, Not A Gesture Of Yours, Can I, Nor Shall I, Ever Forget." Classic Love Story. The Definitive Film Version.
Count Leo N. Tolstoy's classic novel has been transferred to the silver screen numerous times, most notably in 1935 with Greta Garbo & Frederic March and in 1948 with Vivien Leigh & Ralph Richardson. However, this opulent and magnificent version, filmed in Russia (which lends it greater authenticity than previous film and TV versions) is by far the best. Sophie Marceau ("Braveheart") is ...

Alexander Calder (American Master Series)
Frequently Calder's work is belittled by condescending critics who consider his work childish and naive. This look at Calder and his work does justice to this innovative master. Calder's greatness is often beyond words in the sublime grace of his mobiles and stabiles, making it difficult to articulate just what it is that is so awe inspiring to many of us. The producers of this video, ...

An intelligent look at a cliched situation
It is astonishing what a good script, good acting and good all-round moviemaking can do. On paper this film looks like one of those awful made for TV "based on a true story" tear jerkers, with two exceptions: the mother isn't the hero and the father is gay. Another potential giveaway as to the film's quality might be that the leads are not played by Melissa Gilbert or Susan Dey. It is, in ...

Best adaptation you're likely to find!!
This is the 1979 Yorkshire Television production starring Mike Gwilym as Sid Halley. It starts with ODDS AGAINST, and then adapts five more stories. Perfect casting. My only comment about the high quality of this production is that Dick Francis dedicated WHIP HAND to Mike Gwilym and Jackie Stoller (the producer of the series).

masterpiece
I must give this 5 stars. I understand why the previous reviewer found the story to be somewhat confusing. It takes some doing initially to pick up the thread but it is a slight hurdle. The most outstanding feature of this film is its artful portrait of Blunt: a spy who had betrayed his country, abused his position and caused the distruction of those acting honorably in its service. ...

A Movie for the Dreamer
Contrary to what everyone else thinks about "Seamless", I thought it was an artistically brilliant movie about the true meaning of family. Sure, the acting was bad and the effects weren't great, but the movie reaches a philosophy that any true raver would understand: raves aren't about the drugs, they're about peace, love, unity and respect. This movie demonstrates all of these ideals. The ...

Bi Sexual Street Hustler & Nude Model
A seamy side of the '60s, San Francisco style, as bisexual street hustler J.C. blithely sells himself to whomever comes along: a bored housewife cheating on her husband; a fat drag queen who wears a corset and sings; or the tricks in the balcony of a theater showing ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS ("I said ten bucks or I'll break your hand!") Blaming everything on his whorish mom and sleazeball dad, ...

True story
This is the true story of Helmuth Von Moltke, a German aristocrat who attempted to thwart Hitler from his position within the German military. Though his plot to assasinate Hitler failed, he did manage to save the lives of many Jews. He was one of the last people to be executed by the Nazi government near the end of the war. Of course, this man was a true hero who deserves to be ...

What is the Colour of Justice?
This is actually a true story. Stephen Lawrence was a young Black man about to enter the prime of his life when he was murdered on the night of 22nd April 1993 in London. His death made the local television radio and the very news next day. It made the national press on the morning of 24th April 2003, but for most part it was hidden on the inside pages, some murders don't get the coverage they ...

What can I say?
What can I say? This version of "King Lear" was absolutely perfect. Minimal scenery to be sure, but that left me to actually SEE and HEAR Shakespeare and the inimitable Mr. Olivier without the any trappings. Marvelous production! A "must see" for Shakespeare enthusiasts.

A DETERMINED WOMAN
Meet Eleanor Branwell the only woman in her medical class. Daily she must endure the taunts and sexist remarks of her classmates and professor. Witnessing the out dated surgical practices of her professor sickens her and he refuses to even allow her to do surgery. Sounds like a woman in the the late 1960's or early 1970's trying to break into the medical field, right? WRONG! Our heroine is a ...

Great series...Here's how to get more eps!
This is a fabulous series, well scripted, fabulous acting. Riveting drama, it truly captures Victorian England at the time. Unfortunately, I have only been able to get 7 episodes of this series. There are 22 episodes, why would only 7 be distributed?? It is completely assinine, and makes no sense. While looking for more info, I was told this series didn't get "good ratings". I hear this over and ...

an achievement
You may think that it would be impossible to make a boring film about the exciting life of French aviator and writer Antoine de St. Exupery. You're wrong. This filmmaker achieves it! By chopping up his life into bits and pieces, scrambling them, presenting such brief snippets that it is impossible to feel anything for any of the characters, this filmmaker has achieved the impossible and ...
