The Full Hamlet
Whatever your views on different versions of Hamlet on film (and there are lots of them), this one is a must, a benchmark. In addition to its excellent, well-known actors (including Kate Winslet's debut), it gives us every line of Shakespeare's original. In other words, this is a great starting point and/or reference point for viewing other versions, and a major achievement by the directing team. ...

The Best By Far
The Branaugh version is visually beautiful, but--as much as I didn't want to admit it, as I loved that film and have been unhappy with Gibson's recent work and off-label commentaries--this version is by far the best. While the Branaugh version is tightest to the text, in this adaption, Mel Gibson exquisitely captures the complexity of emotions that work away at his reason, and ultimately lead to ...

The best version I've evern seen
When I first read that Laurence Fishburn starred in this version of Othello, I was slightly disappointed. I know Fishburn from his early films which included "Boys in the Hood" and "School Days" However, from the moment he appeared on the screen, Fishburn took ownership of the title role. He played with such convincing passion and jealousy that I was mesmerized by his portrayal of "the Moor." ...

A wonderfully creative and accessible 'Hamlet'
A terrific updating, using Shakespeare's language, but set in modern corporate New York City. Beautifully shot, on a shockingly low budget for it's look, with amazing use of New York locations. Hawke is very good, and most of the rest of the cast, including Bill Murray (to my surprise, doing Shakespeare), Kyle MacLachlan, and Diane Venora are first rate. More important this is a ...

Overall, better than Bragnah...
What is the difference between reciting the "to be or not to be" soliquly on the floor with slitted wrists or standing in front of a mirror? One answer: ACTING. I had seen Kenneth Bragnagh's Hamlet not too long ago when I lost intrest in the play, the intrest came back after recently leaning of another version tobe released next year. Out of nowhere, I saw this preview for this film version of ...

MacBravo for Macbeth
McKellen and Dench are amazing. The entire ensemble is terrific. This production focuses on performance over spectacle, with little to no set design and a combination of period and modern costuming. The darkness of the lighting design supports the themes of light/dark. At some points, the actors look directly at the camera, which can be a jolting convention for some. For Macbeth fans, this is ...

Just brilliant! Put it on DVD!!!
I have seen most of the modern Hamlets & Nicol Williamson soars above & beyond them all. First of all, he totally ENGAGES, his diction is astonishing, you never miss a word, a beat, an intent in the lines. It's a riveting performance enhanced by Tony Richardson's brilliant direction & cinematography reminiscent of the golden age of Dutch art. This is a fantastically vivid production with less ...

Tradition has its merit.
Just as when you think about the Ten Commandments, you think of Charlton Heston as Moses in "The Ten Commandments" (1956). Everyone knows that Hamlet looks like Laurence Olivier. People concentrate on Oliver and may miss the great camerawork and atmosphere for him to work in. There are longer and flashier versions out now, many quite good however this is the one that will always come to mind. ...

Intruiguing double-roles and role-slitting
Starring Quentin Crisp, Anthony Meyer, David Meyer, and Helen Mirren, this film is unique in its use of role splitting (several different people play Hamlet), and Helen Mirren plays both Ophelia and Gertrude. This is definitely a film that all theatre/drama producers should watch in order to see another creative way a text can be reinterpreted.
The Shakespeare Plays - Hamlet (2 VHS Cassettes/3.50 Hrs.)
BBC/Ambrose Video Publishing
In what is perhaps his greatest and most popular tragedy, Shakespeare uses a tense drama of murder, conspiracy and revenge as a medium for probing the most fundamental human problems: justice, guilt, madness, death, and the difficulty of understanding oneself and others. Noted Shakespearean actors Derek Jacobi and Claire Bloom portray Hamlet and Gertrude.

Animated Shakespeare for Children of all ages
This title is actually an animated version with real actors' voices, about 30 minutes long. Our kids love it, and the 5 other plays in the series. Most of the reviews on this topic actually refer to Kenneth Branagh's full-length video, not the animated version. My kids and I hope Random House completes the series with childrens' videos of all the plays. END

Well done and informative
For anyone interested in a behind the scenes look at how a play proceeds through production this video is for you. The Birmingham Repertory Theater is the setting for this production directed by Derek Jacobi with Kenneth Branagh taking the lead as Hamlet. Narration is provided by Patrick Stewart to guide viewers through the production process. Interspersed between scenes of the rehearsals ...

Simply the Best
I saw this production when our local PBS station aired it over 17 years ago and I never forgot it. I was thrilled to find it on DVD. Costuming is understated, contemporary and the focus of Kevin Kline's minimal set designs is the lighting (mood) rather than overproduced dressings which are inconsequential here when the stength in this "HAMLET" are the actors; their hands, eyes, posture, movement, ...

Androgynous Prince of Denmark!
This video seems to have been made to cash on Mr. Malakhov's rising reputation as an international star. The plot follows Shakespeare's play, but many secondary characters and incidents have been ommitted. The sets and costumes are poor. Mr. Malakhov's tight metallic leoptard outrageously emphasizes his private parts! A rather poor actor, his Hamlet has neither anguish nor depth. The other dancers ...

It harrows me with fear and wonder
"Hamlet" doesn't need any introduction -- the tortured Dane, the ghost, meditations on suicide and a climax full of death. But as well-known as the storyline is, the play itself is what deserves the attention, both for Shakespeare's shadowy plot filled with uncertainty and treachery -- and for his brilliant, immortal writing, which takes on a new dimension when read on the page. Prince Hamlet ...
